KONI Inserts - Installation Advice?

I have questions regrading Koni front inserts installed on oem top hats:

  1. How far down the strut does the top bolt need to be tightened?
It was torqued to 37 ft.lbs like the instructions say but I barely see the tread from the top.
  2. What can be used to cover the top because the oem rubber covers don't fit? Tape maybe?
I see some barings visible on the top hat and I'm not sure if a cover is necessary.
Thanks!

mine look the same, I have white line mounts so they have there own covers. I drilled a small hole in the center so just the tip of the adjuster pokes through, should keep most of the grime out.

I will probably pull a strut apart again to make sure everything is as far down as possible, I would like to see some more spare treads.

Pretty sure the front nuts are more than 37ft lbs. Realistically, the nut is going to stop on the threaded portion of the shaft once the nyloc seal is engaged. Make sure it's nice and snug.

I cut a hole in the OEM dust cover for the adjuster to poke through.

yeah 37 does sound low now that I read it. I'll admit I didn't exactly torque mine, I welded up a custom tool since i dont have fancy through sockets.

Thanks for the input!

I did feel that the nyloc seal (blue color seal) engaged. So it should be alright then.

I will also drill out the rubber OEM dust cover for the adjuster.

Here is Koni saying 37 ft lbs:

My mistake! In any case...you won't be threading it past the nyloc washer in the nut, not without a serious impact wrench which you wouldn't want to do anyway.

The rear is secured with an M12 nut and flat washer (not a flanged nyloc nut like the front) and Koni provides a table with different values based on size (M10, 12, 14) and type of fastener (flanged nut, nut with flat washer, etc.). I can dig this up when I get home tonight.

The rear M12 nut required 37 ft lbs. I had no trouble with the rears since it was a flat nut & washer like you mentioned. Just the fronts being a flanged nyloc nut, I wasn't sure.

Cut a tiny slit with a utility knife on each rubber cap. It'll still seal pretty well. Check for moisture after heavy rain if necessary.

I will try cutting or drilling a small hole tomorrow. Thanks!

Cutting is best, as it will make a tighter fit on the tip of the adjusting knob.
