aLapRecorderHD vs. Harry's LapTimer

Anyone have experience with both? Which one do you recommend?

I tried the trial version of aLapRecorderHD and it was great when it worked, but isn't all that reliable. Sometimes, when I tried to play specific recorded video files, it would always crash as if the data was corrupted. Other times, my camera recording would be overexposed (too bright to really see anything) or it would do this weird rolling thing. I'm using a Galaxy S3, if that matters. Anyone know why it might be doing that? I'm hesitant on buying the full version if it will be just as buggy. And it seems like the developer abandoned the app in 2011 (last updated). Does anyone have better luck on other Android phones?

I might consider buying a used iPhone (or iPod+external GPS) just to use Harry's LapTimer if that is more reliable. Can anyone comment on this app? Is it compatible with the Elm27 bluetooth OBDII device?

Harry is currently developing an Android version of his software. I've had very good luck with Harry's LapTimer and have received incredible support from him. I've met a few people at the track, who had a few issues with HLT...but that was purely due to the direction POIs not being correctly setup (I too had issues, until Harry explained it to me).

I recently started using an external bluetooth GPS with Harry's, and every lap is within 1/100 of a second compared to the transponder. I'd recommend getting an external GPS, if you want better accuracy. Mine happens to be 5Hz (compared to 1Hz from the phone):

If you're happy with your Android, I'd just sit tight...wait for Harry to finish development, then give his a try.

Edit: I should have also mentioned, that I have a GoPoint BT1 OBDII device connected as well. Oil temp is the only thing that will not get logged, because our cars use a non-standard PID. I brought this up to Harry. He's looking down the road to add a PID editor, but nothing concrete at the moment.

Thanks, didn't know that Harry's LapTimer is coming to Android.

I found out that aLapRecorderHD does not work properly after Android 2.3.6. I'll probably just sit tight until Harry's LapTimer gets released for Android. In the meantime, any Android lap recorder substitute out there?

Not going to be easy if you are on 2.3.6.
I started using trackmaster for android with external 5Hz GPS. Check that out.
