Left gas cap off and door open all night in heavy rain
So last night was the first time it rained in months, first time with my new FRS. I managed to forget to put the gas cap back on and I didn't close the door. It rained pretty hard for at least a few hours. Since the hole is angled up so much and nothing else seems to preventing entry of water I'm a bit worried.
Do you think I need to take any precautions? |

Wow this has to be a troll,
There is no reason to have your gas cap off at home...or anywhere except a gas station. PREcaution the PRE means you do it before you do something stupid...not after. if this is real you HAVE to get your fuel tank drained you do not want to run that gas thru your car. |

yeahhh...... drain that tank, don't drive it. Remove rear seat to access it and suction out the fuel or drop the tank. IDK the difficulty of doing that though.

If I drain the tank, I have to get all 13 gallons out? From what I've googled so far, I was hoping there shouldn't be enough water to be a big deal. |

I just figure because the hole is so small and it is mostly covered by the body of the car it probably didn't get much rain. I'm about to drive it to work and I just wanted peace of mind. I suppose I should be calling a mechanic. Thanks.

What you should be asking yourself if you decide to just drive it even if there is a lot of water in the tank... "Is it worth the risk?" Is roughly $40 of gas too much of a loss for you? It should be real easy to pump the gas out. The seats come off easy, and the tank is right there. Depending on the type of gas reservoir, you might be able to siphon the gas out of the gas cap area, I doubt this will be in option though since most if not all newer cars have defense mechanisms for that.
Lift the back seats, lift the hatch, open up the gas tank, and siphon it all out, this is the best way to do it. Tough lesson to learn. |

I know it's a stupid mistake, I feel like an idiot, but wow this forum can be pretty unfriendly.
Thanks for the response Surakusa. As for the logistics of emptying a full tank of gas, I'm not sure I have the tools or storage to do it so I guess I'm probably going to have it towed if the mechanic says something similar. What a nightmare. |

give a break to OP. we all make a stupid mistake once. like others said, don't risk it driving it if you have no idea how much water in. if you don't know what you are doing, tow it to shop or bring a tech guy to take out gas even though it costs $$$$. better than spending over thousands dollars to fix your motor
