Damn near free sound tube plug

I think nearly everyone has ear plugs laying around? If not, they are nearly free...

You know the foam kind that you compress and shove into your ear?

Like this:

The sound tube isn't all that big. Just take a pair and chop one of the ear plugs off leaving some line so you can retrieve it later from the tube. Roll it in your fingers to make it skinny and stick it in the sound tube as shown:

The foam will expand filling the tube. I spent a half hour in home depot looking for a 7/8" cap. It is way easier to find ear plugs!

I would think of that more as a sound reducer and not a sound eliminator. I'm sure it cuts down on some of the volume coming into the cabin but I doubt it does a total stop. You're still going to have sound coming up to your ear plug and also sound will be using your firewall as a resonator. If you went in the engine compartment and eliminated the tube I would be willing to bet it would be even quieter.

Actually, I've got it capped off and it makes a pretty noticeable difference. You're right, its not an eliminator, but it does quiet it down a whole hell of a lot.

Now if only I could shove ear plugs into certain people's mouths and cap off their noise generators...

I wonder if a butt plug would work in the firewall....
