GoPros - Anyone use them for AutoX, etc.?
Just bought a couple, but they came as the helmet bundle. I was debating using one as a helmet mount, and another either on the side/roof of the car. Just wondering if anyone had a particularly dramatic place to mount them. Also does the suction cup damage your paint/body panels at all?

I have one on the hood and one on the harness bar (watching driver input). Pretty common spots.

i've seen guys put one right at the front of the hood, and if there's no harness bar another good location is the 3/4 window behind the driver so you can catch driver input.
helmet mount will probably make a lot of people who watch dizzy.

I'm going to order the suction cup mounts, but the reviews scare me quite a bit. Lots of complaints of them falling off. For autox I don't think I'd worry too much, but it concerns me for other use. Just to be safe I was thinking I would mount on the rear windshield (from the inside) to record driver inputs, and then put one on the rear window panel on the outside.

I've had a few Hero 1s, Hero 2s, and just sold those for a Hero 3.
I have a mount on my cage for one, one mount on each side of the dash, one on the front splitter, one on the rear bumper (best for exhaust note) and have used the suction mounts on the side. It's nice to be able to switch the different angles for different sessions.

I've used my Countour HD camera for autocrosses and track days. Alternate between using a suction cup on the windshield and front fender (always with a tether - never fallen off) a helmet mount, and a headrest post mount.

I wouldn't be too concerned about suction cups falling off if you mount it on clean glass surfaces...
I like the helmet camera angle, did my Hero 2 helmet mount to give an eye level view from the RH side of my helmet... [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xzbKAahWEw8"]FR-S @ MS-R Houston - Session 2 (Helmet view) - YouTube[/ame]

I've use the suction cup on rally and it's never fallen off (knocking on wood)! On the FR-S I've used the suction cup only on glass, I'm still too anal about the paint. On the rally FX I put it on glass or body, but make sure the surface is clean of dirt. Experiment with all kinds of angles. Interior shots that include driver are good too. For rally, my super low angle under front dam is pretty neat. Pointed rearward it gets the front strut suspension and wheel. BTW, lookout for the Hero 3, the lens is now glass. I destroyed one lens the first time I used my new Hero 3 using it for rally-X mounted low on side pointed at front wheel. I was used to the old GoPro's polycarbonate lens that can take a total beating. Now in the name of "superior image quality" GoPro has used glass, for an extreme POV action cam?! WTF? Now I have to think about where I put the camera to keep it out of dangers way?! Wasn't that the whole point of this camera?
As long as surface is smooth, clean, pretty flat, and doesn't flex much the suction cup is pretty secure. If surface flexes a lot, it won't, I've tried it on my snowboard and it doesn't stay on very long. |
