Clutchless shifting

Have any of you tried to clutchless shift their 86?


The other day I realized how easy it is to clutchless down shift 3rd and 4th in this car, buttery smooth, no grinds, no resistance. It's not a particularly good thing to do but it's a rewarding feeling when you do it right. I probably did 5-8 shifts like this (100% success rate) and now I'm done. Just glad I have some capacity to do it in case my clutch master goes one day.

I did by accident the first time. I was in traffic and was just coasting along very slowly. Engine was at idle and speed was about 6mph or so and it drops right into 2nd. Of course, I had to try it in another gear so I found engine idling and about 3 mph it goes into first very easily.

I don't have the testicular fortitude to try it at fast speeds, but I would think theoretically, the right speed and engine RPM it will fall right into place.

i used to do it in one of my old cars all the time, other cars have not been so nice about it.
I can't say it didn't do any damage as i did blow that gearbox up.. but i generally put it blowing up to me flatshifting and side stepping the clutch at a smidge under the redline

I parked just right on my driveway and could get into just about every gear without any resistance. Didn't force it if it didn't want to go, but that was a minority of the gears.

I heard shifting in this way was perfectly fine for the gearbox?

i repair and drive trucks all day so naturally i tried it. it is very smooth but i haven't continued doing it. its about matching you rpm to road speed

Hah actually I had been driving our ancient ford ranger at work more recently an that thing (once warmed up) is easier to drive without the clutch. And yup, as you said, with a proper rev match its extremely smooth.

The very first time I clutchess shifted this car it was while rev matching a tight turn and going into second...a few seconds later it had hit me that I never used the clutch for that shift. Tried second a few more times, pretty easy but 3rd and 4th? No problem!

Maybe grip ronin can educate on this given his experience. I would imagine its still not good for the synchros

one reason i didnt get a manual, is that it would have been hard to break my habit from my celica, some reason the c60 transmission it came with didnt require the clutch from 1st to 2nd when under 6k rpms, would just slide in, even if the revs dropped 2k below where it needed to be if it were revmatched, or i could just do it taking off from a light, anything under 25-30 mph the 2nd gear would just accept it...

was really nice in traffic not having to clutch the 1-2 shift

anyone try to see if this tranny is in any way the same?

Used to do this all the time in my first car, but I haven't tried in the fr-s yet.. might give it a go

Like others, I did it on accident @ ~30 and going from 3rd to 4th. Very smooth.

I did it a lot in my old s10 pickup, was really easy and that trans was bulletproof with the weak 4 cylinder. I don't want to start the bad habit in this car so I will not be trying it.
