Get well man.

Lots of people are getting sick today and about 3 days ago my bf's uncle died from the flu. I think it had some contributing factors to his death such as smoking, drinking and some old age, but he's gone nonetheless.

As a public announcement could people pleeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaase listen to this one request.

Please do not cough/sneeze in your hands. Do it in your elbow. (Meaning you have your hand touching the opposing elbow).

Your hands touch everything. From desks, pencils, friends, hair, eyes, noses, doors, keys. I have a pretty good idea that the cause of the flu is due to people not properly protecting themselves and preventing it from effecting others.

And some advice to those who are having the flu. Vitamin C MAY work very little but if you want to get well quick its Vitamin D3 and if you're out in the sun a lot--take D2.
Vitamin D helps contribute to your lymphocytes (the body's army). It attacks unknown enemies in your body.

Why not take Vitamin C? Vitamin C is mostly used to repair parts of your body. It doesn't really contribute too much in helping you fight off illnesses. Its been studied that Vitamin C would only help those who practice extreme environmental workouts. Like lets say skiiers or marathon runners. You can search that if you're curious.

Also drink lots of warm water or tea (Preferably something with Lemon/Honey). Eat lots of (Not super salty things) but relatively salty (chicken noodle soup/Porrage) and easily digestible foods to make your flu go away faster.

Stay healthy everyone. This death of a person made me feel like I should help some more people or at least give some tips or advice.

I met my bf's uncle at my bf's sister's wedding. He was a happy guy. Made everything fun and absolutely loved sushi and a couple months later he's gone.

Anyways, stay healthy and get well soon @brillo

sorry to hear that, puts my issues in perspective for sure.

I got a flu shot and still I got the flu. Thankfully between the flu shot and the tamiflu what I have is a mild case but it still sucks.

your PSA is very true. I work for a Canadian bank and they are very big on your advice since so many people in Canada are trapped in practically air sealed buildings during the winter and the Flu is a big deal up there.

I never believed in the flu shot. Like how you got it - getting the shot then getting sick with the flu - is what I didn't like. There's also a norovirus(stomach flu) going around too and this one is scaaaaaryyy. This one can go in your body just from you touching a surface or eating something contaminated with it. I didn't get the super norovirus bug (which I think I didn't) I got the more standardized stomach flu where I couldn't eat anything hard to digest or I would have explosive diarrhea. lol

Also washing your hands for 10-15 seconds and after you're done drying with a paper towel use that paper towel to open the door. Hand sanitizer may work if you use it seldomly, but if you use it obsessively the general bacteria/germs/virus that is on your hands may become immune or less effected by it.

Whether you believe it or not, it works. The thing people misunderstand is that you can be vaccinated for one type of the flu and get sick from another type. Inevitably, people then say "The shot did nothing!" Also, part of being vaccinated is not just avoiding FEELING sick. It's so you avoid being a CARRIER and passing the virus to others. You can have the flu and not show symptoms.

@brillo I was very sick earlier this month; my energy is only now returning to normal levels. Get lots of rest and fluids. Dehydration can easily complicate things. What saved me was anti-nausea medicine.

But I haven't gotten the flu.

I think its more of a mental thing and how germophobic I can be. Lol

Hope you get better man. I don't know what the flu is like, but i'll bet it sucks.

I personally think if you shield your immune system too much it will never build up a good defense. I protect myself, but not to the extent that some of the germophobes that I work with do, and they get sick more often then I do. I can't recall ever getting the flu, or the flu shot.

Then people who skip the vaccine and feel fine while people around them get sick will shrug and say "But I haven't gotten the flu" as though there is some correlation. No. Bad bad bad! 1) Coincidence. 2) Maybe you have it and passed it them unknowingly. 3) The mental thing you describe, if it means you are more diligent about hand-washing and other precautions that fight the spread of disease, then yes this can play a part.

The best gameplan is 1) get vaccinated and 2) stay diligent.

If vaccines don't work, then why aren't smallpox and polio ubiquitous in the first world anymore? We wiped them out! And the only reason they're coming back in the 3rd world is because people go there and spread conspiracy theories that vaccines are the devil, government plots, et al. Contrary to the commonly-held Muslin belief in Africa and southwest Asia and India... vaccines are not a plot by white christians to kill them off.

Hah! The teeshirts thing. :P

As for the vaccinations. Those are entirely different. Flu virus strands are different every time. Polio and smallpox generally have a small variant that can be taken as a single dose (shot).

Back to the flu.

The flu will always ALWAYS. Start out as somewhat "unknown" for roughly 1-2 weeks. The very first symptom you'll get is fatigue. It may be a little or it may be a lot. Then goes into this ridiculous headache and changes in temperature. Of course there are some changes in order they go in but they will mostly start as fatigue.

The biggest and easiest way for the flu to get into you is through pretty much every orifice open on your face (nose, eyes and mouth). Most of the time people touch their face subconsciously and won't really realize that they're touching their face until their hand is already there. When you yawn your hand is at your mouth. When you itch you scratch. When you're tired sometimes you rub both of your hands on your face to wake yourself up.

Someone else who has already has the flu strand in them and is dormant in their body until it finally arises has probably yawned then touched the coffee handle. They most likely touched that bathroom door handle. That running faucet. There are not enough studies/evidence to prove that the flu can be passed through the air. As much as I want to confirm that I'm not given enough proof that flu-germish particles are around you when a person coughs; however, colds and its different variations may.

Off-topicish.
Most people don't get enough Vitamin D in their body. Specifically Vitamin D2. Which helps build and maintain a healthy immune system. This is because most of the time people are indoors and or are afraid of getting "skin cancer" which in some cases is reasonable.

I love this talk. lol I feel like I'm educating myself with some information I had to re-look. hahaha. THANK YOU! :P

I had the stomach flu early the first of this year. It suuuuuuuuuuuuucked and laid me out for two days, and then an extra day of laying around getting my energy back. Then my son got it, but it didn't slow him down at all. Puked twice and went straight back to playing after each time. Toddlers... He was fine after a couple of days too. My wife got it worse than all of us and was down for four days, followed by her mother in law when she came over to watch my son for a bit when I had to go to work to do some unavoidable local client work. Entire house sprayed down with Lysol after that bout.

Feel better soon!

Thank you too!

The CDC tracks geographic and demographic information to determine who/what/where the flu will be each year. There is no point vaccinating for a strain that you are unlikely to come in contact with. The only thing that would be is costly. It would not be efficacious.

Because we live in a modern first world society with generally clean surroundings, decent health care (albeit with USA's broken system), and easy access to potable water we have forgotten the lessons from history. If this was 1925 and you offered people a flu vaccine they would jump over each other to get it, because they saw what it is capable of. It was the "Spanish Flu" in name only, it killed people all over this country. Nowadays most people file the thought of an epidemic in the "Nah, it'll never happen here" folder. But that is naive. It was a national emergency when H1N1 killed 20k people in 2009-2010. Imagine that in the millions. If smallpox came back to the USA we'd be fvcked. Absolutely and totally fvcked. We are not prepared for any of it.

Going out in the sun is nice too.

I've had the flu twice in my life. Once in pre-school, and once when I was 10. Never had a flu shot, and never will get one.

I always watch what I eat, and I try to be careful around others. I use sanitizer every time I finished pumping gas at the gas station, wash/sanitize at work, school, etc. Also another thing that may help (or could just be a placebo) if someone near me sneezes or coughs, I hold my breath for a few seconds so I don't breath in their germs lol. Might be crazy, but it seems to work for me.
