Driving a windy backroad in a car that's not an FR-S or BRZ.
Hi.
I don't have an FR-S / BRZ yet, but if I do, I'm going to take it on this road. Even a lowly Toyota Matrix is fun on twisty roads. Can't imagine how much more fun the road would be in an actual sports car. This may be boring to some people. My friend, you dont need a sports car to have fun driving on a twisty road and alot of the members on this forum can agree to that. Watching the video right now and looks like a bloody blast!

That's not boring. It looks like a hoot! It reminds me a lot of our Catalina Highway here in N.E. Tucson.

Thanks.
I'm still impressed at how well my 2009 Matrix XRS handles. Most of the pavement on that road has a 'texture' to it. Instead of the regular smooth pavement. The textured pavement gives you more grip, but at the expense of tire wear. My tires also don't seem to squeal on it nearly as easily. Note I did leave the car's 'nanny' systems on (traction control, and vehicle stability control). Hence the beeping around sharp corners. I have driven it with the electronic 'programs' off. You can drive it faster / harder, but at the limit it's less forgiving. Even with trac / vsc on, you can drive to about 80% of the limit without it being overly hard / tiring. I grew up on this road. 2-3 times a month we would drive this road in order to get groceries / etc. As a kid, I would usually end up falling asleep on the way back. What's weird is I would always wake up when we were only 2 minutes away from home. I guess subconsciously I knew I was almost home by the corners at the end of the road. The entire road is 90km one way. When I made this recording, I drove it round trip with no break in the middle. Each way took about 55 minutes. I can tell you, after almost 2 hours of 'that' kind of driving, I was mentally exhausted. Note the speed limit is fairly low (80 km/h). But the corners are sharp enough you don't have to speed (much) to make the road interesting. I don't know how it works in other areas, but here, the yellow signs posting 'speeds' for corners are "recommended" speeds, and not the actual "speed limit". Hence a corner posted at 40 km/h, I can drive at 75 km/h, and not be speeding. This was actually recorded about 2 years ago. Just never got around to posting it. It was taken with my iPhone 3GS. I since have a go pro camera, but would also like to get an obd2 data recorder so I could overlay speed / rpm, etc on the video in post. Project for later. |
