Any info on the automatic transmission?
I know that it's derived from the automatic in the IS-F, but I'd like to know the gearing and what kind of control we will have. What RPM is the stall? What is the torque capacity? Does it shift smooth and crisp, or like a typical slushbox?
My last 6 cars were manual so I don't know if I want another, it's starting to annoy me with clutches that wear out the second you up the power and tons of racing. Automatic guys are always faster once you tune them, plus it is so nice to just cruise without worrying about rev-matching. |

Here's what we do know:
-Aisin made -6 speed -based on the IS-F -paddle shift mounted on the wheel -has a Sport mode and a Snow mode -has a Manual mode (M on the shift gate) -rev matched downshifts -temporary manual mode (when you hit the downshift paddle in D) |

Lotus uses a Camry 6 auto in the Evora, and just with software they apparently made it into a pretty damn good sports transmission.
Auto guys shouldn't worry. If they've taken lessons from the IS-F's and whatever Lotus did with the Camry's, it'll rock (for an auto...).

Enjoy your parasitic loss too. The IS-F can tolerate it because it has a V8 engine under the hood that produces quite a bit of torque. A transmission with a torque converter has no place in a car like this. A dual clutch setup is what should be used in the FRS.

in Inside Line review they say
"Eye on Driving Fun There are disappointments, but they are minor. The six-speed manual is a touch notchy, and not quite as precise as an MX-5 shift, while the six-speed auto that is also on offer changes smoothly and quickly, but lacks the sharpness of its dual-clutch rivals. When it's on, the ESP also intervenes too harshly — the sound of it at work is so loud that you initially feel as if something has broken, and it scrubs out power delivery at an overly dramatic rate." some small info on automatic trans |

Maybe bothering to put in an automatic at all was a requirement of their marketing department. If I were Toyota I would have spent virtually zero time dealing with the auto, just throw in whatever if I were forced to, otherwise it'd be manual only, as a sports car should be IMO.

parasitic loss? there are ways to minimize that, just look at mazda's new skyactiv AT. small torque converter with full TC lock up early and often. nobody knows the details of the FT's AT yet, but if it is based on the IS-F's 8 sp, then there will be TC lock up from 2nd gear on. and 1st gear? yeah the TC "slips" like a slushbox, but guess what? it also creates torque multiplication in the gear you need it most. and last but not least, when your fancy DCT craps out, and you're out of warranty. good luck with the $10k bill because most if not all of these trannies are NOT serviceable and can only be replaced with a new one... Me and my crappy AT based off a known platform used in multiple cars for years? i can source enough parts to build another one from scratch... like i said, AT haters gon hate. if you have nothing to add, move along. your insults fall on deaf ears... |

Which review said it has a snow mode? I think I read somewhere that it's great in the snow but I don't remember reading about specific snow mode. If it does have one that might be useful cause of the snow we get up here.
