Good snow brushes?

This is for all the members who are actually going to be driving their cars in the snow:

What kind of snow brush do you use on your FR-S/BRZ? I used to drive an old beater Corolla and I just had this dingy little snow brush. It did its job and I didn't really care about keeping the car looking nice. But with this car, I realize the brush is really stiff, and the scraper isn't very gentle on the windows.

Can you guys recommend a brand or a specific snow brush that would do the job, and be gentle enough to not scratch the paint and windows?

Thanks!

It's more important about HOW you use the brush than WHAT brush it is. Buy those brush from any auto store and just don't brush too hard. Don't brush the paint and scrape the windows lightly.

There are not much differences between brushes to brushes. There is no Corolla brush and Lamborghini brush. It's just... a brush.

If your plastic scraper is scratching your glass windows something has gone wrong. Use the scraper on the glass and the brush on everything else and you'll be fine.

DO NOT brush any painted surface. PERIOD. no matter how light you go, there will be marks. For the windows, pour hot water on it. All joking aside, brush windows lightly.

I usually let the car warm up, with heat/defrost on max, and then brush a few mins after, once the car starts to warm up.

When looking at snow brushes, feel the bristles... Higher end brushes are "pre-frayed" on the ends, and are much softer. Only a couple of the brushes at my local Canadian Tire were of this type.

White car FTW :P
There will be scratches but you'll be hard pressed to see any of them unless you REALLY look for them.

I just try to get the free toyota brushes from the dealership when they send me some newsletter thing that has a coupon for a free snow brush lol.

A trained eye will spot them just as easily as on a dark colour car.

I picked up one of these, and by all accounts it does the job well. So far.

That's what I have now. The bristles are so hard. I ran my hand along the bristles and it felt like it would actually scratch me if I brushed myself with it. Though to be fair, I got it free from Toyota, so it really is a cheap piece of crap.

If you are driving your car in the snow I wouldn't be too worried about getting a few swirls from your snow brush. Just think of all the salt spray and salt rocks that are going to be pelting and spraying your car.

Your best bet is to get one of those that are just a flat piece of material with no brushes, and push the snow off a few MM above the paint. As for glass, unless you use it like a hammer there will be no harm to glass.

Agreed! Every single snow brush out there will scratch or scuff paint a bit. Even if you have the most gentle bristles, there will be a bit of damage due to the dust or rocks that are kicked up onto the clean body panels, snow on top and then sliding/pushing that snow off. The only way to minimize this damage is to get something without bristles.

Try to look for something called "Sno-Brum". Something very similar is used by dealerships to reduce the amount of scratches caused to the paint surface, and hopefully after 1 season of snow your car won't be covered in swirls. It looks cheesy, because of the "as seen on TV" but many detaillers swear by it if you HAVE to drive your car in winter.

https://www.snobrumusa.com/

But if you are winter driving your vehicle, there is very little you can do to stop the little rocks or particles that settle on the car body under the snow from being abrasive when it slides across it. The only thing you can do is prevent further damage from the tool you use to brush it off.

If you don't want to order online and can't find one locally, you can always pick up a squeegee from the hardware store. Get one with a slightly longer handle and use that in a "pushing" motion to gently take the snow off your vehicle.

I know it sounds excessive to some people, but after watching quite a few details and doing some myself, the amount of time it takes to polish even simple swirls or scruffs out of paint will dramatically change your mind. You will baby it.
Here's a detail of my vehicle after owning for only a month. You can scroll down and see the photos of the baby scruffs that are the result of ONLY wiping down the car. Imagine he damage of taking a stiff bristle brush all over the vehicle. You might as well be using sandpaper! It took 6 hours of polishing to get all the scuffs out of it before the Opti-coat application.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE put some strong insight into selecting a snow brush and how you push/get snow off your vehicle. It's vital to the paints health and you will thank yourself years down the road.
