Has anyone install a light weight flywheel?
Just asking if other members of this forum have installed a light weight flywheel and if so what are your thoughts. I am installing my flywheel on Tuesday and want to know what to expect out of this mod. I will be using factory clutch.

The CSG BRZ doesn't have a lightweight flywheel yet. However, on my personal S2000, I have the Exedy OE Replacement clutch kit and a Toda flywheel. The stock AP2 flywheel is 22lbs and the Toda flywheel is 8.4lbs. You will expect to have better engine response when you rev match and the engine will sound a little livelier. It is an overall better driving experience.

I haven't put one on these cars, so I don't know the level of difficulty. But I did put one on a 1.5L Honda engine and love it. The engine revs so much faster and easier, it really took a lot of the response lag out of the engine. The car became much quicker at autocross. I put a heavier duty clutch and pressure plate in while I was there since it does take time to get everything apart. Dissasembly of pieces to get at the transmission and clutch are the biggest time sinks in the project. Make sure you remember where everything goes to reassemble it.
Let us know how it goes, what you encounter along the way, and how it behaves later. |

I've heard some Subaru's don't idle properly, and can throw codes if the mass is reduced too much.

I personally knew people who ran that setup and never had the issue.. It was pretty rare, but as you know only the people with problems say anything. Not the hundreds that don't have problems. I've never heard of anyone with a newer Subaru on the 32 bit ecu or canbus ecu have any such problem. I would do it and not look back if it were me. In fact eventually I will have the lightened crank, lightened flywheel, and carbon fiber driveshaft. |
