My FR-S is a mess

My 3 month old FR-S at the dealership (again) suffering from check engine light/traction light. RPM's dip so low the car shakes and feels like its going to stall. It also has popping, ticking noise coming from the trunk, drivers side door has a poor seal...it rained recently and i had water drops forming inside and to make things worse the dealership is playing dumb, like they don't know what i'm talking about. The car was fine until i hit 3,000 miles then all of this. So as i type this, i'm car less and frustrated. Sorry for the rant, i love my FR-S but this is ridiculous.

And you would assume they know what your talking about why? Do you think people come in with the same complaints daily? I think its so funny how people assume the dealership knows all the complaints for every car. Get over it and let them fix it. This is the first year for the FRS and very little have been sold. It sucks but lt is what it is and I know it sucks

A dealership service manager absolutely should know of every TSB for every car they sell at the very least, and at least one or more of the OP's complaints have a TSB.

Your comment reminds me of a visit to a Honda service manager for a post-flood related symptom(no hydro-lock). He mentioned to me that I should never be driving my 8000rpm redline '00 civic Si at or past 6000rpm...ever. He was dumbfounded and speechless when I told him about VTEC and how it it starts at 5800rpm.

The point I am getting at is that this guy clearly had no clue about the products he oversees the service of, AND demonstrated a complete lack of even general automotive knowledge(when he was equally shocked at learning how to calculate mpg!!, I'm not joking).

You find these imbeciles everywhere. Nobody should be making excuses for them, and you definitely should expect more from them. OP, print out the necessary TSB's listed this section of the forum and bring it back. Try not to make them feel too stupid, or you'll be one of the roasted tire club.

Hi,
Popping and ticking sound from the trunk? I had that issue with my 1400km Toyota 86 as well. Fortunately, i have fixed it. I felt very irritated as it's such a new car. The cause of the annoying sound is the rear central brake light cables protruding underneath the boot. You can try to tape the small cable with some adhesive tape or Scotch tape. It will help, at least in my case. I thought it was something more complicated than that.

Hope it helps.

Mine got check engine light on too and had the same RPM problem like u did when i was at 700miles.. took it back to the shop and they gave me rental cars for 2 1/2 weeks for free... it was suppose to take a month cus they said they had to wait for the computer chip to be sent from japan... after 2 weeks i called them and complaint to them and the next day it was ready.... i guess dealerships less prioritize the warranty cars cus the dont make money out of it and prioritize on the non warranty customers.. my advice is to keep pushing them and they'll fix it for you

Yeah, it blows my mind how ignorant some of the service guys are. I mean, it's fine if they don't know but the problem comes when they try to tell you a lie to get out of doing something.

I remember when I was working at a dealership, I kept asking the service department to check a loud screeching noise coming from my engine bay that would happen sometimes. And they kept telling me it was fine and just a belt squeak or something. But I was trying to tell them I knew what that sounds like and it seemed more severe than that. So anyway, they never bothered looking it over and I decided to just trust them that it was no big deal and kept driving it until one day an engine pulley bearing seized and broke all my engine belts and overheated my engine and left me stranded on the coldest day of the year for an hour or two. So what would have been a simple bearing/pulley replacement turned into that plus 3 drive belts, plus a head/block resurface, new gaskets, etc, and having to share/borrow a car for a month. And no, they didn't do anything for free, they only gave me a tiny discount which I think I got anyway from working there.

After that, I had similar incidents happen with them where I had to insist things and prove to them that I knew what I was talking about. So yeah, not having to deal with service departments is a big deal for me and is a big reason why I am waiting on this car until they can get all these major issues sorted.

The car shot up to about 4000 RMP with my foot not even on the throttle. I dumped it into neutral, shut it off and coasted to the side of the road. Scary crap. I love this car but exploring my options right now. Lemon law and other things.

Tell your dealer to have their techs stop trying to figure it out on their own and call the tech hotline. They have a database of all the problems and repairs done on all models, and they will simply tell the techs what to fix/replace. That should take the guesswork out of it. My dealer did that and I got my car back in 4 days, as opposed to the many other owners waiting 2-3 weeks for their cars to get back from a CEL repair.

I mentioned this to the service technician so now some toyota head mechanics and some pencil neck will be pouring over my car monday when they come in from the Los Angeles area. They have for sure identified that the ECU has gone bad essentially causing my car to go haywire like it did. The popping clicking could be structural related i was also told. I'll be seeing a lemon law layer and get some advice. This sucks

gotta correct you bud, the warrantee work for the A techs is good pay because the work is faster and they get paid for the full time so if lets say an ECU change is a 2 hour job on their system and the tech does it in 25 minutes he still gets paid the 2 hours job . plus for them its easy because they 90% of the time have all the parts on hand , plus the dealer still makes money on the warrantee repair. my friend beggs to be an A tech everyday at his dealer lol
