Question about oiling filters

I remember my uncle telling me when he used a K&N that the oil would mess up his MAF. I googled it and people said that you cannot over oil the air filter.

Well how do you know when you have oiled it enough for any of the filters that use oil?

Do you just put a very little bit on then let it sit overnight and do it again the next day? Would that method work?

How would you even know that you are applying enough? If you dont apply enough I am assuming that more debris will get through right? Or would it just act like a regular dry air filter if you didnt oil it enough?

This has always been my curiousity and basically a reason why I never got any oiled filters because I feared of putting too much oil on when cleaning it. Replacing the MAF is pretty expensive also which is why I never tried it. I know a lot of people have sworn by those filters but how do you correctly apply enough and know when to stop?

Couldn't tell ya one way or another. I'd try contacting a few different manufacturers and see what they suggest.

you can over oil them. it's pretty simple really. just do a light coat on the entire filter, so it covers it completely.

You coat it with enough oil so that it looks like it looked before you cleaned it. Remember that K&N filters are meant to work when a little dirty and should not be cleaned for 50,000 miles unless you drive the BAJA 1000.

Instead of offering that type of advice dont post at all. Thats pretty obvious you know. But I instead would like to learn how to properly oil them so I can use them.

I have read that a lot of air filters come over oiled sometimes. People tell me that if you over oil it then oil will get through and damage the MAF. Since a lot of CAI use oiled filters I want to learn how to properly do it so I can get one that requires oiling.

A little filter oil shouldn't damage the MAF, but it may throw the readings off. If it does, the car will run like a bag of poo. If you are worried about it, pick up a spray can of electrical contact cleaner. If you have a problem, the sensor is easy to remove and spray out. That will fix it if it is fouled by oil. The proper oiling procedure depends if you are using a squeeze bottle or a spray can/bottle...

For the AFe, the re-oiling instructions are:

Hold the filter in the vertical position with the pleats running up and down.

Apply a small bit of AFE oil to the top of each pleat. The oil will run down each pleat and soak it thoroughly. Do not over apply the oil--this will damage the filter.

Let the oil soak for about 12 hours, and then re-insert the filter into your vehicle. It is ready for use.
