Oil Filter
I looked at advanced's website said they had a Bosch at the store for this car.
I get there and they hand me a Fram. I notice the fram fit, but has a smaller diameter than the OEM. So I guess I screwed up (you would the think the store would know what to use.) Where can I order a decent filter online? Also I don't know much about a boxer engine, should I be worried about a check valve or something since the filter is upside down ? |

I had this confirmed by a tech at Subaru and he even confirmed with SOA. The black filter that came on the BRZ/FRS is the 15208-AA130 and the replacement filter is a smaller diameter bluish/purple 15208-AA15A. I was told that the AA130 came on the cars, because the newer AA15A were not available yet.
So the newer AA15A (bluish/purple) are what should be correct for the cars and it is smaller in diameter and taller than the ones that the cars came off the manufacturing floors with. Hope that helps some.

The NAPA Platinum filter (made for synthetic oil) is #41334.
Also for all you DIY'ers on oil changes, if you haven't changed your oil yet, let me forewarn you.......the oil pan drain plug has very short threads on it. I didn't measure it, but it's 1/2" or less. I was expecting to have to turn the nut numerous times before it pulled out and after about 3 turns or so it was SPLOOSH.....oil all over my hand. Was not expecting that at all. And that 0W-20 comes out fast! |

LOL... thanks for the warning.
I ended getting the mobil1 0w-20 fully synthetic and the mobil1 eqivalent filter after cross referencing all the options on the fram site while at the store. |

Let us know what your feelings/observations on the Mobil 1 is after your change. Seems Subaru guys don't like the Mobil 1 since it's shown to eat oil, but I'd like to see for myself. I've got 6 qts of Royal Purple 0w20 left and after that I'm going to try Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntech and see how they do.

RE: The oil filter. Ask the Subi guys and they much prefer the black oil filters made in Japan by Tokyo Roki over the blue(ish) ones. I'll stick with the 15208-AA130 filters for as long as I can buy 'em. Someone here posted pics of various filters cut open a while back, and the Tokyo Roki appears to be a very well made piece.

What are the Tokyo Roki filters worth elsewhere in the world? The Toyota boxed SU003-00311 cost me $20 more than the TRD ones here in New Zealand

Here in Canada, people have said it is around $20 for the filter at the Toyota dealer. When they open the Toyota box, there is a Subaru 15208-AA130 filter inside. For that reason I haven't tried ordering one from my dealer. I just go next door and buy the same filter from the Subaru dealer for $8. If you have a Subaru dealer near by, it might be worth checking out...it could be the same situation in NZ.

Toyota charges $20 for the exact same filter that Subaru sells for $8??? How is that possible? Do they re-brand/mark the filter? If not, how in the world do they expect to get away with it? Do they expect people to be that stupid?
On a side note, can anyone cut apart both the AA130 and the AA15A filters? Just out of curiosity, I'd like to know what the differences are. Or have any additional info on either of them? So far, all I've gathered is that the 130 was originally created to fit the 2011 Foresters and that the 15A was just recently created specifically for the new BRZ/FRS.
