Does anyone know where I can get an AE86 in the U.S. without importing it? Because I was looking and most of them are rhd and most likely wouldnt pass emissions test when it went through customs. I dont want end up buying one and ending up like these skyline dirvers

Are the Ae-86 and corolla GTS really that different? I would prefer an Ae-86 but i'm scared it will get confiscated.

Are we... Are we being trolled? Oh hell with it, troll or not, i'll bite. The Corolla GT-S IS an AE86. All AE86 stands for is the chassis designation: A-Engine type (4A), E- Corolla, 8-8th generation of the series, 6- 6th model of the generation. Look under the hood of any GT-S or SR-5 (model years 1984-1987) and on the firewall you'll see at the very top "AE86". The difference comes in on the actual vincode, where GT-S's start out with "JT2AE88" and SR-5's have "JT2AE86". This doesn't matter anyways, as those aren't chassis codes, they're vin codes, for registration purposes. BOTH cars are AE86 chassis'. The mechanicals between the GT-S and the Japanese variants GT-V and GT-Apex (I use both ,since both cars came with options that the GT-S has) are practically the same, save the difference in MAP vs. MAF for intake, along with emission parts installed. They all have the 4A-GE Twin Cam 16valve engine, 5spd transmission, and 4-wheel disc brakes. The japanese cars are slightly lighter due to the less stringent crash test regulations in japan, and as such, have more stylish bumpers (they're smaller, and look better. The GT-S rear bumper, by contrast, looks like a park bench). Even though the SR-5 has the AE86 chassis, it does not have the 4A-GE, rather only the single OHC 4A-C (c stands for california emissions, so techincally, its just 4A) thats carbed and doesn't have quite the umph behind it the 4A-GE does. It also doesn't have the disc brake rear-end, and no SR-5 ever came with a LSD option. You do not want to import a japanese version of the AE86, as the pricetag to buy one (in japan they're just as expensive as they are over here, if not more so), ship it, and then make it STREET LEGAL would be so astronomical its not worth it. (unless you want to drive it around illegally). Best just to find a 1985-1987 Corolla GT-S and go with that. Its practically the same thing, minus RHD. I've both seen both the gts is a coupe right? and the japanese one is a hatch? I like the hatch better. Is a big pain in the ass to import an ae-86? i really dont care if its rhd. Is it like a skyline or is it easier to import?

usually Ill tell people not to buy AE86, best way to do this is buy a ok condition rolling chassis and restore it, put it together by your self. |

Depends on what you find. An unmolested GT-S with slightly faded paint and the owner, not knowing what it is, selling for only ~$1200? Guess that doesn't really happen much anymore in SoCal, but out here in the east, there are still plenty of unmolested AE86's to be found from unsuspecting owners.
