Engine shaking/vibrations at 1700rpm - when in neutral/idle - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

Hi Guys,

Just noticed something with my 86 manual, at idle and in neutral, when I rev my engine to about 1700rpm, the engine and the car starts shaking a bit, i.e. like its timing is a bit off or something like that, almost like the engine is missing or something?

Reving thru every other part of the rev range its very smooth, but if i rev thru 1700rpm or keep it around there it shakes/stumbles kind of - Is it just me?

If not, is this a normal thing and what might it be explained by?

Hmm sounds like it is a known issue - some people have it others don't - anyone else tried to see if it occurs or not?

Checking in. The entire car shakes (might be a strong word) at this RPM.

coincidentally this is also where the engine is noisiest if you're loading the engine in second gear at slow speeds. It sounds quite rattly.

oh lol.. I thought my driving skill was so mediocre that created that sort of noises.

Necro posting here, but mine does the same thing. Brand new 2014, 12 days old with 300 miles on it. Probably normal. Feels like a slightly off balance washing machine load. Kinda sounds like it too. Solution? Just don't hold 1700 in neutral.

+1 stay out of that rpm range as much as you can. Its the natural resonant frequency of your engine more than likely.
Take for example a Garret turbine engine - has a resonant frequency at around 20% RPM which I think is around 7200-10000RPM so you have to kill the engine if it sits in that rpm range for more than 10secs

Once the transmission brakes in , the low RPM rattles will almost disappear . For me me , 3000 miles or so I noticed this ... My 2cents
