Even though Perrin says that their Oil Cooler is thermostatically controlled, this was the oil temps driving today and it was 50 degrees outside not some artic chill.

My shop contacted Perrin and he mentioned this isn't abnormal with the 185deg thermostat and suggested I just partially cover the cooler for non-track scenarios if I am "concerned about it". Another solution he suggested for "cold climate" customers (and 50 isn't exactly cold) is to use their 200deg thermostatic housing for the winter months and switch back to the 185deg one for the warmer months.

It seems ridiculous that I need to make and use some homemade shield or buy a special adapter (which they don't have in stock right now which is super awesome) anytime I want to drive it anywhere in the fall, much less the winter. Even if I put a different thermostat that is only 15 degrees warmer on there and I'm just driving down the highway and it's 30 degrees (20 degrees colder then what I just tested) it's going to have the same issue.

Am I being crazy and this is normal and everyone that has a Perrin oil cooler has oil that has the same consistency as molasses in every month that isn't summer.

I have a Perrin oil cooler as well however my car has been moved into winter hibernation.
Anyway, should I had encountered your issue and wouldn’t be tracking soon I might consider pulling the sandwich plate out from under the filter and tying it off somewhere temporarily.
What grade oil are you using?

I’m using Amsoil signature 5w30.

Pretty normal for any thermostactic cooler plate. They still trickle a small amount of flow to cycle the oil in the cooler. I zip tie a small plate in front of the grill of my car when it is cold out when I happen to drive it.

I put the block off plate on my Perrin cooler every winter, but I’ll remove it for spirited drives (and obviously for track). I installed it with Velcro tape, and my grille is broken in 4 different spots so it’s “easy” to slide it in and out.

It’s easy to make:
Go to ace/Home Depot/Lowe’s and buy this. .025” thick aluminum sheet. You want to cut this sheet to 4” tall x 11” wide.

Velcro tape from an auto parts store or Amazon. I bought this large pack because I wanted to use the Velcro tape elsewhere like for sound deadening.

150 is fine. Block it off if you want but that's plenty hot enough immediately post-cooler. Why are you running 5w30 with an oil cooler anyhow? If your pressure is still low, something else is wrong. 140 PSI is where the relief valve opens. As long as you keep it below, say 100 PSI peak, all of your oil is still circulating where it should.

Totally normal and acceptable.

The temp is post-cooler, not in your engine bay.

I use my license plate to partially block off airflow to my Perrin oil cooler on the street. In 50F ambient on the highway, my oil temps will usually sit around 160-165F, so looks like it makes a 10-15F difference (compared with your oil temps). When you get to the track, it’s just two screws to take off your license plate.

If those temps are still too cold for your liking, you can always try swapping the thermostat. But as others have mentioned, the temps are measured post cooler so actual engine oil temps are hotter.

You don’t want to downsize the cooler because the Perrin is already somewhat marginal for track days. I’ll see 245F peaks on 95F days.
