If this is your first BRZ/86, it does take a bit to get used to the transmission. I went from a Mazda 3 to this, took me a while to make smooth gear changes and having vehicle jerking in between.

Mine does this, it's really really annoying. The drivetrain lash in the car is crazy. I'm working on getting rid of as much as mine as I can, once my car runs I can let you know if I was successful.
I've upgraded the motor mounts, transmission mount, strut mounts, struts, differential bushings, subframe bushings, and installed a carbon fiber driveshaft.

Previously, I used solid transmission mounts ( without any other driveline bushings being upgraded) and it removed a great deal of the drivetrain lash. I think the secret is moderately tightening everything up.

1st is the highest gear ratio, so it'll be more torquey than other gears on and off throttle.

It's all in the art of driving. Take your foot off the gas, brake or clutch too quickly then you will feel a similar response from the car, jerky and other strange happening.

Move smoothly, the car will respond in the same way. I try to drive in a way that my passengers don't feel any discomfort, even when I am traveling quickly.. it's doing less in the car, don't want to be too busy unless you're a rally driver on rally stage.

All my cars did this in 1st gear.
Just needs a slight bump in the road while in 1st to get the action happening.
Sometimes a clutch action is required to get out of it.

I do find when I leave it in 1st after just starting it becomes more noticeable than when it is properly warmed up.

At low to mid RPM, yes. And if you're unlucky (or a little ham footed) you can get into what people in the aviation community refer to as a PIO (pilot induced oscillation). That is your foot will respond to the "off throttle" jerk by adding gas to smooth it which results in a jerk in the other direction which leads to ... you get the idea.

I think it's best to learn when and how to use the clutch to smooth these things out.

As some have said, it's normal, and takes practice to master - mostly time. After a couple years now, I still continue to notice my improvement in smooth gear transitions. You can always become a better driver when it comes to an MT.

am I missing something here but when were gas pedals in sports cars an on/off switch? very simple answer to OP, if you want to be as smooth as possible, learn to calmly press & release all 3 pedals..

Each time I read such threads, I get the same thought, the driving schools are not teaching their students well!!! The cars (unless it has a fault) will drive as it's been driven.. drive it rough, it will respond in the same way..

If you're in the States, the driving schools use automatic cars to teach their students. THAT'S the REAL problem.

But you can still learn to drive smoothly.. in UK, if you pass your test in an AT then that is all you can drive, however, if you learn to drive a MT and pass your test in a MT you can drive both..
