OFT E85 - Push Button Cold Start
Hey guys,
I switched over to E85 last week with OFT. I downloaded and flashed the off-the-shelf v4.03 Stage 2+ e85 for ZA1JD00C. I just have a cat-back mxp exhaust, I haven't done headers yet. I've been driving daily and I'm almost through my second tank. I made sure to let the ECU do its thing with each fill-up and once it's warmed up I've been having some fun for sure! I've been monitoring my afr and fuel trims and everything seems fine. Last night leaving work, the car took longer than usual to turn over. Then, this morning the car didn't fully turn over and died. I had to crank the ignition twice - second time no issues. I understand that e85 burns cooler and it is common to take longer to turn over on a cold start. I read a lot of posts from years back, and I thought that the new off the shelf tunes fixed some cold start issues. I live in San Diego and last night it was only around 59 degrees. I've heard in California for some reason the ethanol percentage is usually pretty high, but I have no way of knowing the % for sure at the station I fill up at. But I'm just assuming the ethanol percentage is high if I am having issues at 59 degrees? I have a push button start, and it seems like the push button ignition only wants to crank for around 1 second before giving up. Is this normal? Will it fix itself? I'm a complete beginner to tuning and I really am scared to edit the tune. If I keep having issues in summer weather I might flash back to stage 1. Anyone have any advice for me? Thanks |

It's normal - as you said, the ethanol content in CA is on the high side. It's been about 55-65 F here in the mornings and the first start of the day will usually take 2-3 attempts.
One fix is to add a gallon of 91 with every tank of e85. Another fix would be to modify the cranking fuel injector pulse width tables, as shown in this thread: https://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131387
