Tyre pressures
35psi front and back for both 16" and 17" wheels is recommended in the Brz manual.
I always run about 5-6psi more on the front and 4-5 more on the rear. Running my tyres like that seems to get me the most even wear across the tyre. I tend to corner fairly heavy in both my cars and the it's just feels sharper with higher psi. Downside running higher psi is hitting Sydney potholes and lower wet weather grip. ![]() What is everyone running ? (or thinking of running) |

I like to run a couple of PSI higher in the front that the rear normally, it gives sharper turn in (front sidewalls stiffer), flex in the rears gives a little additional assist, and of course there's more weight on the fronts.
It's a car-by-car thing though so will wait until I've got the car and tested a few variables before I make a statement definitively, on the Elise I ran equal pressures and it was fine. |

My wheel alignment guy recommended 40front and 38 rear. He said the factory tend to err on the soft side for road comfort for the average driver. If you are not just a poser, then the extra is probably worthwhile.
He has a good racing background. I figure most tyres are gradually leaking too so it helps to be up a touch. Track use is a whole other matter as far as pressures go. |

40F/38R is that cold pressure??
that's high for street use i reckon. |

Yes. Tyres should be filled while cold.
I even saw the recommendation in the NRMA magazine a few years back. They recommended running 5-6PSI more than standard. There was a comment after that statement that explained the lower wet weather grip due to the less flex in the side walls. etc. My dad has a front heavy camry. I always told him to pump themp up more but he always used the standard and was chewing through tyres too quickly. and still is. Still heaps of tread down the middle but the sides virtually bold. My Brother has a MR2 spyder. When he picked it up from Toyota NEW the tyres were pumped to 50psi front and rear. The car handled really well. After 6 or so months he noticed they were wearing out through the middle quite alot but not the sides. So told him to keep them around the 40 mark and his new tyres have been wearing evenly ever since. Still handles really well on 40psi. Its a spyder. Life size go kart. |
