Stock exhaust manifold/header removal tip

i installed my gruppe s uel today. I've watched numerous videos, and read a few threads on how to take out the stock manifold. Pretty much every video/and thread said to take out some bolts from other points in the exhaust where there is a gasket. It was either remove bolts from front pipe meets over pipe, or front pipe to the pipe behind it (sorry don't know the proper name for it).

Well, i took a short cut. Once I got all the bolts off. I pushed the exhaust manifold up, and towards the front of the car. That gets you about 80% of the way there, but the bolts in the exhaust manifold are still stuck in there. I tried this method 2 or 3 times. Then i realized that i could stick a screwdriver in between the gap of the exhaust manifold and the over pipe. I used the screwdriver just like a pry bar, and that did the trick for me. No need to remove any other bolts on the exhaust. Yes i did this in my garage on jacks stands, not a lift.

Just posting this for future reference for anyone that will be doing a header install on an frs/brz/86.

Photo for reference of where to stick the screwdriver once you get all bolts off and get it loose enough to have a gap in between the over pipe and stock exhaust manifold. Obviously you do need a long screwdriver.

fyi, not my photo, taken from another thread.

I think it is generally not advised to pry on and potentially damage the flange faces, opening the door to exhaust leaks

Let alone damage your screwdriver. Pry bar for prying, screwdriver for screwing.

If they're designed for it, then by all means.
