Fluids change after break-in
I'm planning on changing out the fluids(diff, tranny, motor) on the car just after break in to try and discard all metal shavings and unwanted debris from the drivetrain. Anyone recommend any specific oils or should i just go to subaru dealer? I know many will say it is useless but please lets just stick to the opinions and experiences of which oils have been good to you for drivetrain as i already got the motor replaced, dont want this to become a hostile "to change or not to change" thread. I've used mobil one 75w-90 on my S2000 but thats about it.

Lol i know but its whats on the manual(FR-s) 75w-85 or 75w-90. I've done some reading and in hopes of helping out.
Tranny oil recommended- since the "TOYOTA Genuine MG Gear Oil special II" is not yet available in the States by either Toyota or Subaru. - AMSOil Manual Transmission fluid "GL-4 75w-90" meets brass synchro standards. 2.2Qts Diff- Mobil one 75w-90 1.2qts Please feel free to share your experiences and opinions.

Redline 75w90 or Motul Gear 300 75w90 - you choose. Both very well engineered and not over-marketed. It wouldn't hurt to use either for every fluid possible.
They both also have awesome ester based motor oils. Redline 0w20 and Motul 8100 0w20 / 0w30

I've never had good success with purely syn tranny oils like amsoil or redline in my transmissions.
I'm going to use the Pennzoil Synchromesh stuff until the MG Toyota oil is available in the states. The Pennzoil is designed to very friendly to yellow metals, equivalent to 80w or so (75-90) and good for up to 300F. I ran it for 50k miles in the S2k and it was great winter and summer, daily and track. I've got 1500 miles on my car now and I plan on doing the engine and transmission oil this weekend. Not sure about the Diff yet. |

I think the diff is just regular gl 5 75w-90 or 85.

I highly recommend Motul fluids! Run them in my Evo currently and every Subaru I have built

Motul would be for the differential? I have doubts whether to use motul gl4/5 in the tranny since it specifies to use GL3 in the manual, what do you think?

I've done mine already. I used Redline MT-90 (75W90 GL4) for the transmission, and 75W85 lightweight gear oil for the differential. Both have magnetic drain plugs stock and the one in the diff was kind of grungy already (not to worry, that is pretty normal for differential gears as they wear in).

So the gl4 is good for the tranny then, I was skeptical since the manual says gl3 and with the brass synchros in the car I wanted to make sure to use the right lube. The 75w-85 for the diff is also redline? Did you replace any washers? Can you share where to get these, as i cant find the 75w-85 lightweight gear oil. The only thing i find says film thickness like 75w-140, no mention 75w-85
Found this in another thread. Oil Drain Gasket: 803916010 M/T Fill plug gasket: 17008AA050, get two as one is for the drain. Rear Diff Fill plug gasket: 11126JB000 Rear Diff Drain plug gasket: 1215710010

I haven't had any issues yet from the GL4, and I think it will be fine. Redline sells it for Manual Transmissions (hence the MT in MT-90), and I'm pretty sure they would have taken the synchros into consideration. GL5 is the one you may want to avoid for the trans. Some GL5s claim to be ok for the transmission, but I wouldn't risk it. GL5 is more for differential gears.
I thought I had the right size gaskets already here, but alas, I was wrong. I ended up re-using the original ones, and don't have any leaks. The hardest part of the job is getting at the transmission. You have to remove the engine "skidplate", so you can remove the one under the transmission, so you can get at the drain/fill plugs. It's not hard to do, just takes a little time the first time out (and laying on your back). I'll try posting a link to the gear oil... http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=40&pcid=4 My local Parts place was able to get it overnight from one of their suppliers. |

OK,
Just changed the engine oil, transmission oil and rear diff oil. Amsoil 0w-20, Pennzoil Synchromesh, and Amsoil 75w-110 Severe duty gear lube. I like how the transmission and rear diff fill/drain plugs use the same hex size. I do not like that I have to remove both under trays to get to the transmission! I noticed something about the transmission fluid that came out (besides it being very clean); it looked, smelt and felt identical to Honda MTF. I've been driving and racing Hondas for over 15 years and have been around Honda MTF for a long time. I can smell it a mile a way. I wouldn't be surprised if this wasn't the same stuff, especially since the Honda MTF was what was used in the S2000 transmission which isn't too far from the 86 transmission. To fill the transmission I used a long copper pipe I had with a plastic tube on the end of it to go into the fill hole. At the top of the copper pipe I had a little funnel that fits inside it and voila.. I can fill from above! No pumping! Ok, I'm going to go for a drive now. |
