Question How to connect DSP headunit to BRZ?

I've spent days looking for Android headunits and have noticed that a lot of them now come with built-in DSP. Most of these have sweet specs like PX6 chip, 4gb RAM, 64gb ROM and of course a built in DSP and amazingly SPDIF output.

I was wondering a few things.

1. Does the stock amplifier have SPDIF input?

2. How do you connect a headunit with built in DSP and SPDIF output to a '17+ BRZ?

For what it's worth, the HU listing mentions that

Quote:
Digital SPDIF Audio Output

Connect your external amplifier / DSP to the SPDIF digital output directly for ultimate sound quality; If your external amplifier / DSP doesn't comes with SPDIF input, you will need to connect the amplifier / DSP via FL/FR out & RL/RR out.
Do our cars come with FL/FR & RL/RR inputs?

User JstnBrdy said his DSP unit did not work because "the factory amp needing an analogue signal or something along those lines, don't really know". However, I noticed he left his 28-pin loom disconnected and only had the 10 and 6-pin looms connected. He has an FRS but I know for a fact on the BRZ the amp is powered through the 28-pin loom.

Please help me solve this riddle and I will make a guide if I'm successful.

spdif is not an option on these cars. the entire system is a low level analog type system.

there are very few spdif amplifiers on the market anywhere, but multiple dsp's have a spdif input that can then be routed to wear it needs to go.

honestly, spdif has no real benefit in the car unless you've got noise issues and have already exhausted every other potential remedy.

i quickly pulled up this unit in a search:
https://www.eonon.com/Android-Car-GP...-from-ADI.html

it's important to note that it's 'built in dsp' is no different than most other non-android aftermarket radio's. my pioneer 80prs has most of the same audio tuning features--it doesn't have sound effects or sound fields, which i don't use in my home theater setup either...

That's what I feared. I want this unit mostly because of its other specs, like 64 gb rom, Bluetooth 4.2, and that it's available on Amazon, so easy returns as opposed to shipping to China. The headunit is Joying not Eonon, as the latter have generally crappy specs.

For what it's worth, I found a bit more information. 1. A customer on Amazon managed to install the unit on his BRZ. 2. A joying rep told a customer that his BRZ would need a special adapter to connect the factory amp to the headunit dsp/spdif. 3. When I asked what this "special adapter" is, the rep answered:

Quote:
Joying support: Hello friend, please connect your factory amplifier to the AMP-CONT wire of joying harness, and then go " setting-Device-Sound-AMP ON/OFF" to turn on AMP. If there will be a sound comes, you will not purchase the amplifier adapter, on the contrary, you will need to purchase the amplifier. Thank you
So unless someone can decode that enigma, I think I am done LOL. I'll just have to buy a regular DSP-less unit and call it a day.

He's saying that you need to enable the 'amp on' option in the radio menu. It should trigger a 12v signal on a blue with white stripe wire coming out of the radio to tell the amp to turn on.

Don't get hung up on the dsp part of this.

All radios are stupid. The connections all follow 1 of 2 methods, and all the voltages and signal levels are standardized. There is not a single aftermarket radio anywhere in the world that could not be wired into our cars.

The dsp is software only. This is the equivalent of you worrying that your new laptop won't be able to open word files.

The main things to always figure out for any aftermarket radio are:
Size: what adapters/plates are needed? Most radios need some sort of adaptor pieces to fill in extra space, and to alter the oem mounting points to a more universal style mounting point.

Wiring: what adaptor cables are needed? They make adapter cables that are connected to the radio cable(s) to make the radio work in the car. Always use these adapter cables, as it means you never need to cut into the wires in the car, meaning the oem radio can go back in whenever, as well as making troubleshooting easier because the adapter cables use the universal wiring colors, which are much easier to follow.

Crutchfield is an excellent resource for this normally. They cost more due to that, but their customer service to help through the install can be invaluable to someone unsure of what to connect where. But they don't sell android units.

Here's the first one i pulled up.

https://www.joyingauto.com/joying-la...4g-module.html

In the 'included' section it has both wiring methods, 'iso', and '20 pin'. Iso is a euro standard, we use the 20 pin method.

I don't see a link for a manual, so i can't confirm all the wire colors, but it should connect identical to the wiring on page 3 here:

https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...imSjAeemdnkw-2

You should need 2 harnesses for the install:
http://www.ft86speedfactory.com/metr...B#.XVZBt-xOnOM

The 10 pin is for power and amp turn on, the 6 pin is for speaker connections.

I think this harness straight from joying would work as well, but having difficulty confirming that.

Ohhh ok! Let me see if I understand, the problem in not being able to use DSP is the lack of SPDIF in our cars, but you can connect via standard harness connection if you enable AMP option in the options. I was worried because of JstnBrdy's failure in installing his DSP unit but I guess he screwed up by only using the 10 + 6 pin harness instead of the full harness which I will explain below.

As far as the connection goes, I got that figured out thanks to our resident Android HU expert Akuma147. Basically you need the HILUX version of the Joying harness. You can use that universal Toyota Joying harness you linked but you need to then buy the antenna adapter and the 28-pin harness and wire them both to the main harness. If you want backup camera and steering wheel controls you also need to wire a few more things in, but it is all explained to perfection on Akuma's master guide. You do not need an expensive SWC interface for steering wheel controls. If you buy the Joying harness the 10 + 6 pin harness is already included so no need for that.

AKUMA147's master guide

If you confirm the DSP should not be a problem then I'm gonna pull the trigger. All I want to say is, god I love this forum. You guys are so helpful. When I'm successful I will pay it forward and make a guide of my own, though Akuma's is already good enough. Thank you Soundman.
