Clutch/Trans Grease Recommendations/Application

Hey all! So I will be installing a new South Bend clutch on my 2014 BRZ here soon, super excited. Just had a few questions:

What brand/type of grease would you guys recommend using? I know "any high-temp waterproof grease" etc there are just so many, possibly looking for some name/brand recommendations!

Also as for applying the grease itself. I plan on doing a very light coat on the sleeve the TOB sits on, light coat on the input shaft obviously (wiping off excess). There's a bit of contradictory opinions when it comes to the TOB itself, but I plan on doing a very light coat on the inside diameter of it, as well as a small dab behind the clutch fork pivot point.

Any other areas/tips anyone would recommend for the grease application? Also I don't know if it's in the service manual or not but I also plan on applying some blue loctite to the new flywheel/PP mount bolts.

Thanks all!

Just remove enough grease that it won’t spin off and muck up the clutch assembly. I can’t remember what I bought, but I got it at Autozone; one of the brands like Lucas. I coated the inside of the TOB and did the shaft of course along with the pivot and the clutch fork contact points.

I use "LubriMatic 11404 Marine Trailer Wheel Bearing and Corrosion Control Grease" for everything.

High temp axle type grease works well. What the guy above mentioned is good, Lucas , mobil 1 ECT... No anti seize or moly type lubricant.

Apply grease to the snout , where the bearing and fork touch , pivot ball/pocket and pocket for the push rod of the slave cylinder. I apply a liberal amount to the pivot ball pocket and SC rod pocket as it's not going to get into the clutch and will stop any chirping noises. You can also put a fair amount on the snout and once the bearing and fork are installed move the fork a few times and it will push off the excess and wipe that off.

For the input shaft splines , apply some all around and into the spline valleys. Then take the clutch disc and slide it onto the input shaft a few times and wipe off the excess that is pushed off by the disc. There is a good video about this on Exedy USA YouTube page.

Yup I've seen the video you are referring to, I will definitely use that technique. Grease flying all over my PP/Flywheel would be a bad day

Thanks guys for the info.

I had the same question and went full OCD on this.

Subaru recommends Nichimoly N-130, probably what they use straight from the factory. It's unavailable in the US, but the recommended equivalent is Multiplex Red #2 (relabeled as Multiplex 220), which is also almost impossible to find that's not in a bulk pack.

I looked at other main stream lithium greases tech data: Valvoline, Kendall, Mobil 1, and Lucas Red N Tacky is the closest, a bit less in everything in terms of lubrication performance, but the viscosity at higher temps is almost spot on.
