Another throw-out bearing issue - Toyota GR86, 86, FR-S and Subaru BRZ Forum & Owners Community

This is the 2nd time the TOB went bad on my 2016 BRZ. First time was April 2017, at about 23,000 miles. Replaced under warranty.
Heard clutch squeaks again last week. Just returned from a visit to the dealer. Car is at 34,000 miles, luckily! Getting it replaced in 2 weeks time.

Yes, I used the magic "search" button, and realize that the new part 30502AA150 is replacing the old 30502AA051. But I don't know what part was installed in my car back in 2017. If it was the new part with the new grease, that'll be bad news! There will be no guarantee that it won't happen again in the near future even with the new parts, after warranty expires.

What I want to know is, when did Subaru first recommend the new grease as a "solution"?
Just contacted my dealer about the part numbers. I'll update as I learn more...

The TSB is dated April 10, 2017 so you may very well have come in just as it was released and had the old style installed in the car.

I had mine done in December of 17 and if I had not ensured they used the new part number I would have ended up with an old one they had in stock. They were not aware of the TSB since they hardly ever worked on an FRS.

A quick update: Just spoke to the service guy at the dealer about replacing the fork as well. He said only the bearing will need to be replaced, and that the fork is just fine.

There are revisions to the part numbers for the fork. That's why I'm not quite convinced that the same old part is good enough...

If one replaces fork, why not put in velox's forged one?

If the dealer is doing the service under warranty, they may refuse to install non-OE parts even if you supply them. Depends on the dealer.

Did your old snorkle/snout get replaced with the TOB? Was the snout in good shape? Seems like both of your TOB had premature failure before most people’s failed. Even the old TOB should last longer.

Since it's all under warranty, they're only replacing the parts that *they deem* necessary to be replaced. If I want anything else replaced alongside, I would have to pay for the parts. If the OEM fork and snout are really that weak, then I won't mind paying for them myself. My powertrain is all stock. No future plans to boost.

Fork plus pivot comes out to be around $210. Very hard to justify...

When my TOB went out at ~70k, I had to pay out of pocket. I replaced the rear main seal, TOB, clutch, resurfaced the flywheel, and velox clutch fork/pivot. I think it was ~$1700 if I recall with one or two other items, so $210 seems like a drop in the bucket. Lets put it this way, would you rather pay for labor/do it yourself again later on? Just do it now and rest easy.

Another question: checking the latest part numbers for both Toyota 86 and the BRZ... the parts look a little different from each other. Any idea why?

Because they want to confuse everyone - mission accomplished. Both work, at least the older part # from the FRS vs the BRZ. The newer ones under the toyota name look the same, but I don't want to assume its the same as the older FRS design.

If I know for sure that the fork is the origin of all the issues, then yes, $210+ is worth it. But if the bearing still is an issue even with all the revisions, then I'm not sure if I want to spend that much.
By the way, has anyone bought the forged forks and have not had a single throw-out bearing problem since?

I believe Fork/pivot ball are no issues with stock clutch. I believe the issues start when you go to high pressure plates.

I have seen multiple 2013-current year FRS/BRZ/GT86 throw out bearings, and none of them have looked like either of those product photos? They may just be a generic photo they throw on there? This has definitely stumped me as well... let us know what it looks like when it comes in!
