Cracked BRZ Nav screen solution
recently had unsecured cargo come from the trunk become a missle after being cut off on highway causing hard braking, cracked the screen. touch was unresponsive. bought a second hand unit (radio & screen) from a local thinking plug & play, but my nav map sd card wouldnt work with the used unit. i suspect different year incompatibility.
apparently this has never happened in ft86club-land, did searches on the googles & only discussion was on outback forums. But the procedure to repair was far easier than anticipated. after having the radio/nav unit removed from vehicle, remove the clips towards the front of the trim by gently bending the metal tabs with screwdriver, i think there are (10) total. remove screen and flip up the wide white thing holding the ribbon cable attached to the cracked unusable screen. Dismantle the other unit in above fashion then go in reverse to reinstall functioning screen onto nav unit that came with vehicle. |

follow up to this issue, I got the navigation to work but my phone wouldnt pair via bluetooth. deleting the phones didnt work, factory reset didnt work, attempting to re-pair the devices didnt work.
ah-ha, but what did work was taking the circuit board from behind the cracked screen of my original unit (that has the bluetooth module soldered to) and putting it on the faceplate & screen that functions (from second hand source). remove 4 ribbons & 4 screws from circuit board and replace. My MY14 car/headunit was marked FA632US, the second hand unit was marked FA601US (i suspect from a MY13 car) were not wholly interchangeable & functional just plug and play. I thought all of this would have been much easier between the earlier model years. so in summation, in order to get my vehicle back to operating prior to the mishap, I have my original radio unit, my original circuit board with bluetooth module, and the second hand face plate/ screen. I suspect I could have taken it a bit further and removed only the screen from the face plate of 2nd unit, but it would have required removing a couple more circuit boards. Ive had enough troubleshoot rodeo, so hell wit-it! |
