I am so glad that...

... the creators/moderators of this forum have decided to completely disallow any discussion of politics or religion instead of creating a special "off-topic/Anything-goes-but-be-warned" type of room.

I had a FaceBook account for about three months several years ago as my first and only foray into "social" media, and found it to be the antithesis of decent, kind, social behavior, and closed my account. Just wasn't for me. Not saying that some folks use it productively and healthily.. just that lots (most?) don't.

Forums.. well, I read and occasionally participate in this one, Benzworld, lurk on a Sprinter forum, and a sailing forum or two. Unfortunately, recently, on the Benzworld forum, I saw a topic appear in the "New Posts" listings that I was interested in. Turns out, in was in their "unsafe zone" area. Figuring that we're all mechanics, interested in keeping old cars running, that there'd be civility and openness to other viewpoints, so I wrote a very kind, lengthy, thoughtful post pertinent to the topic. I should have known better. Doesn't matter what the topic was, or what I said, and won't go further here. Let's just say that polite rational thought wasn't welcomed in any way, shape, or form. Didn't feel good, and now whenever I read actually helpful stuff, I can't help but remember how nasty folks turn quickly. Same thing happens on the sailing forum.. mention global warming/climate change or gun control, and WWIII breaks out only meaner.

Short version.. It's nice that the only real arguments we have here are about cars, and even then it's extremely rare that anyone gets personal.

Sooo.. thanks for being a great bunch of folks. This place is always enjoyable.

Barry

I feel this way as well.

I think not doing this is why ESPN and the NFL are losing fans/customers.

It use to not matter who you voted for, you could talk sportsball and cars with anyone. Then NFL and ESPN put their hats into the political arena.

I am glad that we can talk cars and not talk politics.

The closest I can get is still being kinda pissed about the US Government bailing out GM. But that topic doesn't come up very often on this forum.

This is a great forum. I am happy that we can talk about cars, share pics of cars, and poke fun at each other in a humorous way.

'I am so glad...' I was expecting a triumphant write up about how easy it was to open his/her trunk... All I see is an ego massaging exercise to pave the way to an easy life on this forum..

I was an "idiot" earlier in the week according to another. People seem to not be able to simply disagree any longer.

In this day and age it is really hard to pick up the phone and call an old friend, you are busy, they are busy....etc.

I have found FB to be great for keeping in touch with old friends, distant family members and even old coworkers from places I have not worked in 20+ years. As bad as it is it is also great at simply staying in each others lives. As bad as it can be I feel the good still outweighs the bad.
