2017+ 3rd brake light 3 flashes from factory?

A question for those with 2017 or newer 86/BRZ. Does your 3rd brake light flash 3 times when you first brake?

So I bought a very lightly used 860 Special Edition (5 months old, under 5k miles). Looking in the trunk last night and it looks like the module that makes the 3rd brake flash is very visibly added and not part of the original wiring harness. There are no other mods done to the car, so I doubt the previous owner did it. Maybe added at the port when it arrived or maybe at the dealership?

Does yours flash? Do you have this module in your trunk?

Looks like prior owner modded it to me... Do you have "tap to turn" as well? (I'm assuming this because I haven't heard anyone else mention this on their car and I'd assume if they wanted the flashing third brake light they'd possibly want the "tap to turn" feature as well.)

No tap to turn (although I'm planning on adding the Diode Dynamics flasher that does that). I'm wondering if it's a regional thing though (dealer or port installed) because I've been noticing more and more cars around my area with the flashing 3rd brake light (random commuter cars, most likely not modded).

That is an aftermarket unit, and looks like ijdmtoy.com unit.

I notice a lot of random new cars have this feature here in WA as well.

I could see it being a "dealer" option charging 500 extra for this safety feature and installing it on cars in their lots. I'm sure this is grey market for sure.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but in that picture, isn't that the proximity sensor for your trunk/smartkey?

I believe you are right that the module on the right is the factory part.

It looks to me that the aftermarket module is the heat-shrinked chip on the left, with heavier gauge wires and crimp connectors.

I saw an 86 a few months ago with the flashing third brake light, it was a brand new car on a test drive. Haven’t been able to find anything about it being a factory option, but it was definitely installed By the dealer.
