Service at low mileage?
Hi all,
I bought a new BRZ last year but I didn't drive very often after that. After the first half year the mileage is just 1700 miles or so. Should I go to the dealers for a service? And it has been 8 months and I haven't done the first service. Will I lose my warranty? Thanks! Last edited by lhy_loveworld; 03-20-2018 at 04:15 PM. |

The warranty requires service done at certain mileage OR times which ever comes first. Even if you don't drive the miles you still have to have it done at the right intervals or you risk warranty work being declined. So... yes go and have it serviced.

You can do it your self just make sure it is well documented. A good idea is to take a date stamped pic of the receipt for the oil and filter beside the odometer showing the mileage. Pretty hard for them to dispute that.

I know Toyota actually has a site you can go to for uploading your service history and receipts if you're doing it yourself. I think CarFax might also. I need to look into these myself, but just pointing you to the right direction. You might want to see if there's a Subaru one or even a website for auto service history in general. My google-fu is weak at the moment because it's that one day of the year where it rains in LA and it has me feeling lazy.

Keep the receipts as a minimum.

Subaru has an app for loading what work you perform but I still show my face at the dealer every 6 months.

If you were to have a dealer give you problems about a warranty claim, you could take them to court or arbitration over it. They may have a defense if your lapse in maintenance were egregious, but they would lose if it's just a matter of a few months. They know this, so they won't give you any trouble about it. They have no incentive to deny your warranty work anyway. The dealer gets paid for the work either way whether the money comes from you or from Subaru. |

Oil and filter yes. It is fine to say "I wrote it down" but if it ever came to a dispute you will be in a better position if you can say "I wrote it down and here is what I used and when I bought it". There are several accounts of denied warranty work on here where the person can not prove they did what they claimed. The dealers/manufacturers are just trying to protect themselves from people that don't do what they are supposed to and then try to make claims. It helps keep them in business.
