Lug recommendations where color doesn't chip

I will be buying some wheels soon and want to get red lugs for them. Thing is, most people complain that whatever lug they have chips/fades easily.

Searching the forums shows peeps recommending McGard. Any other brand recommendations? Price notwithstanding.

I have Project Kics R40s and I’m very happy with them. No color fade or chipping yet

Chipping and fading are caused by somewhat different things.

  • Chipping is usually from mechanical force or a cheap coating.
  • Fading (especially, RED, but also black) is usually from cheap anodizing.

You can prevent chipping by buying good quality product and then loosening them with a socket and breaker bar (and not an impact gun.)

You can prevent fading by also buying good quality product that are not anodized in colors that easily fade (like Red or Black.)

If you want the most durable red product, consider something with a black or silver body and a red cap. The red cap you then remove prior to taking off your lugs so it never gets chipped. If it's made from resin or plastic it will be the same color all the way through, so there is no way for the color to chip off.

Some examples:

Stay away from Muteki, those fade like no other.

Though honestly most lug nuts will fade with time, red especially. Try considering one of those capped lug nuts. Personally I like Project Kics because they have a floating seat which helps prevent scratching your wheels when you're torquing them down.

I've used TPi's lugs for years with no paint chipping. They are awesome and can come with a spline locking nut.

Muteki will fade over time, but are cheaper then most others but such an amount you could replace them every couple years and still be cheaper lol

If I paid $200 for lug nuts that faded I would be kinda pissed lol

To protect them put a plastic bag on the socket, that can help a lottle from scratching the paint
