Corrosion on paint?

Hey guys,

Picked up my FR-S last October. Everything's pretty much perfect but two spots on my driver door that it seems like the paint has been eaten through (or corrosion). I've been advised you can buff it out, but if you run your finger through it, it feels very rough and it seems like it got through the paint pretty bad.

Any ideas what i can do to fix?

Well it isn't "corrosion" as in rust but something pretty aggressive got splashed on there. Don't think there is much hope of buffing it out. Looking at it blown up shows that the both the clear and colour coats have pulled away from the primer. I would buff out what you can and hit the remaining pit marks with some touchup paint. If you are very careful you will get it to a point where you know it is there but nobody else will notice.

I have the same, two, almost three spots on my roof. I haven't fixed it yet but I believe Tcoat's suggestion is your best bet without just getting it resprayed. Maybe wet sand the touchup afterwards to smooth it over if you're brave.

Lesson learned, I bet it was birdshit. Paint ain't as tough as it used to be.

Could be some type of calcium deposit, or its bird poop that ate through the clear. Its hard to determine from the photo.

If on a computer click on the see full image bar at the top of the picks. It has actually caused the paint and clear coat to pull away from the base coat. It ain't pretty.

That's all the way to the primer baby. Yes the photos don't convey it very clearly.

I'm already thinking about what color to change it to when I eventually get myself a nice safe place to park it out of the elements at least half the time. Probably a vinyl wrap in the interest of $$$

If this car taught me anything, it's that I'm shit about taking care of the exterior at this point in my life. Maybe I'll end up a Corvette guy and my car gets as many baths as drives, but until then:

Perfect finish is way overrated. You're just realistic. I doubt that will change.

Ok, now that's just crazy talk.

So is refinishing the whole door. That's paint correction and blend.

Someone splashed some brake fluid (or similar) on there.

OK, so this is an actual thing? This douchebag next door washes his automatic red corvette all the fucking time and then just puts it back in the garage under the cover.

He will literally take it out of the garage, wash it, and then put it away. Fucking weirdo.

Meanwhile my car sits outside unwashed for a year, and I'm actually taking it out to the twisties. Whereas I bet he doesn't know how to drive for shit.

The risk there is that the paint on the 'new' door doesn't match and you'd see it and end up repainting it anyway.

If you want it perfect you'll have to pay at least that much for a spray and blend. In fact I wouldn't be surprised if the $400 spray is noticeable and the only guy willing to guarantee a perfect match would charge much more.

Touch up paint will be far far cheaper, and I don't think you'll get a door up there for less than 500 Canada-bucks.

Go look for Corvettes for sale, the amount of <5k miles/year examples in pristine condition with the phrase "never driven hard, always babied, always garaged" in the listing is astounding.

And far too common in listings for 86's as well.
