Angry Stupid mistake upgrading to bespoke...

I got a upgraded bespoke unit from a totaled car - mainly to pick up navigation.
I ran into an issue that I will outline that I hope will help someone in the future...

After following the other guides in this section, I powered on the upgraded unit and ran into the following issue: The map displayed by the nav function was totally wrong, claiming I was in a different city about 400 miles away!

I ran the built in diagnostics and everything passed. I reset the extension box and it lost all the previous map road data and now claimed I was in an unpaved area - zooming out still indicated I was 400 miles away.

I went into the GPS signal diagnostic mode, waited 5 minutes for signal acquisition and it indicated lock on 11 satellites and gave me GPS co-ordinates. I plugged the coordinates into google maps and they were correct!

At this point I was beginning to think that the used extension box was bad, even though it passed self test. I was pissed and discouraged... time for a drive!

I put the tools away and got ready for a drive. I backed out of the driveway, looked down, and the map showed the correct location!

Summary: After adding a used NAV unit/extension box, your map location may show the last location of the previous car until you move your car a bit!

I felt so stupid for wasting at least 20 minutes trying to diagnose a problem that was not real...

Even my poor old Garmin does this when I plug it in. Always shows the last location until I move. Must say it baffled me the first time it did it. Since it was telling me that downtown Detroit was my driveway.

@nextcar don't feel too bad, I did the exact same thing. Swapped out the base radio in my '13 with a radio from '14 and the NAV unit bought on eBay. Once installed, I made sure I had good GPS signal, thought I was good to go, and then saw the GPS thought I was 1,000 miles from home. Spent about 10 minutes troubleshooting on the radio, couldn't find anything. MomHawk came out, saying I needed to move so she could get her car out of the garage.

I moved about 1 car length and boom, problem solved. Never had a GPS (I've owned probably 2 dozen or more over the years) that did that, at least that I noticed.

Yes, it takes them a second to find out where they are, that's a function of having to find satellites, calculate it's position etc. All others though updated the map once it knew where it was, even when sitting still.

Exactly! Same in my experience... with the others I have used, it could take up to 3 minutes to figure out where they were (based on the number of satellites covering the area - I have been in some very remote places like Bhutan)... but once they locked on the signal, all the others updated the map immediately!
