Another thread about Oil Temp and Pressure Gauges
Alright, so I've been searching quite a bit for threads involving aftermarket oil pressure and temperature gauges, where people mount the senders, how and why etc..
I'm at a loss because it almost seems like you're at a loss either way you go. I have a galley plug adapter up top currently holding my temp sensor (was previously holding my pressure sender, more on that later) and 1/8BSPT male to 1/8NPT Female adapter holding my oil pressure gauge where the OEM pressure switch was. The galley plug seems to be the the only place you can mount the temp sensor in my case because the probe won't fit inside of the 1/8BSPT -> NPT adapter because its to long. The galley seems to be an ideal place for both sensors because from my understanding you're getting a much more accurate picture about what the internals of the motor are getting compared to under the oil filter. Now my question is the reading variations from these locations. With the temp probe in the oil galley, after warming up cruising around the street without hard pulling my oil temps are around ~185*, the OEM sensor will read around ~210 if I recall With the oil pressure in the galley at idle lets say its making about 10PSI, under normal driving around 3G something like 40PSI With the oil pressure reading from under the oil filter I get around ~14PSI at idle and ~50PSI when cruising Why such large differences, i've seen other mentions of this in threads from various people with no real good answer. Im wondering if some real gurus could chime in and inform us on what best practices are, and maybe based on experience especially when referring to oil pressure whats numbers are the "real" numbers, and based on location what the thresholds are. |

for 99% of the non-racers out there, the best way to get temps/pressure is to simply find a good spot to get readings from, whether it's galley plug or an oil filter sandwich adapter.
the temps and pressure at the sensor location is the most important, not "the specs for the engine is this PSI at this temp". the readings are useful long-term because once you have sensor readings, you can monitor/log it long term and determine abnormal high/low readings before it causes irreversible engine damage. that's all there is to it. you can mount it wherever you want... |
