OpenFlash Manager Freeze

Hi All,

I'm a long time OSX & Linux guy who runs Window 7 in VMWare for various Microsofty things I have to do. I picked up an OFT used over the weekend, but I'm having some trouble.

It looked to be unmarried, and the first step I took after getting it was to plug it into my car and do a 'read.' After that, it didn't show any maps available to write.

I figured that was no problem, as I'd installed OFM and downloaded the latest maps to my VMWare Win7 machine over the weekend. Sadly, when I plug it in to the computer, OpenFlash Manager hangs on 'Identifying Device'. The OFT itself shows the generic computer logo, then the SN/CD/Hw Ver/FW Ver.

After a while, Windows complains that the program is no longer responding and asks to close it.

In addition to my Mac, I have a junky tablet running Windows 8 that can't be updated to Win10 due to limited storage. Should I go ahead and install OFM on that device and hope for the best?

I've untinstalled/reinstalled OFM a couple of times, with no joy. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated.

You'll probably have better luck with the Mac than the junky tablet. I run VMware Fusion as well for Microsofty things and found that I needed to go into my VM's settings and create a rule for the device to be assigned to the VM (this prevents any confusion of the claiming of the device or possible issues when critical flashing is taking place) and you may also find that changing from XHCI to EHCI will solve your problem.

Hope this helps.

I also received one over the weekend. My laptop had 4 usb ports, was a matter of trial and error, seemed to like one out of the 4 thankfully, the other 3 had issues trying to read the unit etc.

Thanks for the suggestions @woomis!

I can't install the .NET libraries necessary to run OFM on my tablet, so that's out. I created a rule to automatically connect it to the Windows VM, and checked the virtual USB controller settings - it's set to USB 2.0. Was that what you meant by EHCI?

Anyway, OFM is still locking up on 'Identifying Device' on all USB ports, and through a USB 2.0 hub. I'll probably drop the crazy cats over at OFT an email...

Any further suggestions are of course appreciated!

Yes, EHCI mode is what I meant. Depending on your version of Fusion... it's not always so clear.

Not sure how much help OFT will be solving .NET issues though - those can be tricky. Sometimes the Windows source files are trimmed in order to save on space, which would make sense considering you said it was low on freespace.

http://winaero.com/blog/offline-inst...10-using-dism/ may help repair install .NET on the tablet using the Windows Media. Sounds like a rabbit hole though without a DVD drive and already low disk space.

Try removing tablet from USB Hub (unless it is a powered hub) and try reinstalling VMWare Tools on the VM. As a last resort you may want to try a fresh install on a new Virtual Machine on the Mac and leave it exclusively for tuning.

Well, I can confirm that the OFT is okay. I snagged a spare Windows laptop from work, installed OFM on it, and was able to upload tunes to the OFT no problem.

I emailed Shiv, so we'll see if he has any advice, but at least for now I can run RomRaider on my VM for any customizations, and use the laptop from work to actually upload changes. Working in IT has it's benefits, I guess...

Did you find a way to connect to OFT from your Mac?

I have the same problem with OFM hanging on 'Identifying Device'.

I am on a Macbook Pro with OSX 10.11.6 (up to date with all updates). VMware Fusion 7.1.3 (latest).

Tried Windows 10 and Windows 8.1. Tried VMware settings for USB2 and also USB1.1 with no difference. Tried VMware settings for Compatibility 'Use Hardware Version' 7 (11 is default and latest), which supports USB2 but not USB3, but still hangs.

Also tried running as administrator but still hangs.

Are there any other Mac users who can help? Unfortunately I do not have any other machine.

Thanks

Finally got this piece of shit working in Virtualbox with Windows 7.

Load Open Flash Manager
Connect OFT
Click on the USB icon and selct 'Manifacturer Product JP6 HID [0118]' (yes that is a fucking spelling mistake)
Wait for it to hang (fucking shit software)
Again, click on the USB icon and deselect JP6
Wait for the 'Unconfigured device, it cannot be used.' message and click OK (I am serious!! This is fucked)
Click on the USB icon again and reselect JP6
Then start Open Flash Manager again and it will connect!!

Really this is some stupid crazy shit.

C'mon release the source code and I will fix it for you.

Yeah I had no joy on a Mac, Using VirtualBox, VMWare & Parelells. The folks at OFT said there's an issue with El Capitan, which they'll be releasing a patch for. Frustrating, to say the least.

All that said, I was able to snag an old (old, old, old) netbook my folks discarded years ago. It takes about 30 minutes to boot, but it's good enough for running OFM for now.
