comparison of my GTR and 458

quite a few people were asking for a review of how my old GTR compared with my recently purchased 458 so here we go:

Power - my gtr was around 620whp with 600wtq on e85 and easily pulled mid-low 10 1/4 miles. with the awd it just puts all of it down too while the ferrari struggles below 60mph. even in the rain or freezing temps the gtr don't care, it just goes. After about 140-150mph the gtr's acceleration tapers off and the ferrari feels faster. possibly the better aero, gearing, and higher revving engine has something to do with it. Had it to 180mph the other day it didn't feel like an effort to get there. from a dig the 458 has no chance tho.

Handling - 458 wins out here. the turn in is ridiculous, the nose just darts in without hesitation, the steering is telepathic. The gtr you kind of have to manage the weight and get the car settled into the corner before the awd/computers and use their sorcery to keep it planted and pull you out. You can feel the car shifting the power around underneath you. its definitely a weird feeling the first time it happens.

Braking - about the same on the street. f458 has a 235 front, 295 rear. My gtr had a 285/335 setup. so obviously the gtr has way more rubber, more weight, and therefore more static traction to push that rubber into the ground. the 458's abs activates much earlier because of this. the brakes simply overpower its skinny tires at low speeds. higher speeds and race tracks favor the 458 with its ceramics (no fade, better bite). gotta remember to get them hot though, they don't like the cold.

Interior - 458 by a big margin. no plastics here. all carbon and leather.

Stereo - both are good. 458's slightly better. although the interface and trying to scroll through playlists is pretty more complicated than it needs to be. better highs/clarity in the 458 but there is still a good amount of bass. the GTR is all bass lol. but thats the kind of music i like.

Sound - 458 again by a big margin. mine has the tubi exhaust. my gtr had intakes, downpipe, and midpipe but its like church in there compared to what seems like an F1 engine 2 feet behind ur head. the youtube vids do it no justice.

Ride quality - surprisingly in comfort mode the 458 is better. soaks up bumps pretty nice. in race mode they feel equally as stiff. my gtr had aftermarket swift springs though.

Transmission - about the same, both DCT. 458's software is a little more lively and give a kick with each high rpm shift which i like, and at low rpms its butter smooth. the GTR's is seamless throughout. it feel like one endless gear. My GTR was running the 2013 software.

To sum up the GTR is a very fast street car that you could also daily. Its like an extremely fast maxima from the driver seat. And the 458 feels like a le mans race car, like go kart on roids. I delivered my gtr to its new owner in NC after a 12 hour drive and it wasn't really that bad. My brain felt like mush after driving the 458 2 hours for a clear bra install. The other thing to note too is that driving the ferrari makes you nervous as hell, its hard to leave it parked anywhere because you know people are going to be coming up to it, touching on it, leaning on it, etc etc. GTR lets you be a little more low key, only people who know will know.

Is the 458 better ? yes. Is it worth over twice the price? no.

I worry about parking my 86...I could only imagine the horror I would be going through knowing I'm parking a 458 and leaving it alone haha

Awesome review/comparison by the way!

The 458 is a car on my radar. I've had AWD cars before and I definitely like the RWD cars better. RWD cars typically have less weight and a much livelier steering feel.

The GTR is an incredible car, but you either like it looks or not.

Interesting about the mush brain after 2 hours in the 458. My neighbor use to own a 458. He took me for a ride and there definitely was a drone with the stock exhaust. A 458 for me would be weekends only. Not a daily.

You drove the car to the seller. Surprised the seller didn't have the car transported. You probably put an extra 500-600 miles on the GTR.

Interesting combo with FRS and Ferrari.

Great cars! Both of them.

yeah i've heard a stock 458 fire up before and its no where near as loud as this tubi.

i guess that guy who bought it didn't care about the miles.. he was super impatient and i drove the car straight there overnight without stopping. he paid me good money tho so can't complain

Nice write-up! The 458 is such an amazing car. It would be an easy choice for me.

My best car moment is still driving my friend's 458 (over R8's, Vipers, GTR's, Boss 302's)...so responsive, so amazing...I wish I was rich, lol

The GT-R supposedly has lower drag than the 458, and I think both produce a small amount of downforce, but the Ferrari is a much lighter car so it makes sense that it would feel faster once you're going at a good pace and traction is less of a problem. The GT-R traded outright acceleration at high speed for off-the-line pace and mid-corner traction with its heavy AWD system.

Oh, sure, pick on a GTR. But how does the 458 fare against the FR-S???

Thanks, humdizzle. Very interesting post. I admire both cars from a distance, and only know about them from people like you who take the time to write about them.

Thanks for the writeup. Has the collector value stifled your desire to mod somewhat? My friend has a 458 with the novatech exhaust but he is afraid to do anything beyond that (he also rarely touches >8000 rpm, such a shame).

The more I get into cars the more I like the idea of a 3 car garage setup - DD, weekend sports car (911 GTS, Alfa 4C Spyder, etc.) and a canyon/track weapon. That being said, not sure where my current Z4MC stands among those three. Trying to do it all currently

Awesome review, your analysis is very accurate and I agree on many points you touched on.

With that being said, you're doing us a grave injustice by not posting videos of the 458 with the Tubi exhaust lol. I think everyone here agrees we need more video content and pictures!

Thanks,
Nick C.
