Engine code: P0617
I need some help guys couldn't find much info on this. My brz check engine light is on, checked it out and got a P0617 - starter relay circuit short. Anyone else experience this? Not sure what exactly it means, bad starter?

check the battery first especially if its a few years old. it could also be the clutch or park/neutral switch permanently closed. |

Try this before you check the battery. I have never heard of a battery causing a CEL ever, but I am new to the FR-S so maybe this car is different (I don't know) but this would be a first for any car.
Use Torque to reset the CEL. Normally you don't want to reset codes because if you end up taking this to a shop to get it checked out, they need the info from that code. But in this case, clear the code, I think this is a simple bad relay. Go to your engine fuse box and take out the starter relay and switch it for the horn relay. Simple swap. Then give it a few drive cycles (use the horn a few times on each cycle too) and see if the error code follows the relay. Check the battery cables and all connections to the starter as well as the ground strap for the battery. If you have AAA you can burn a call (you get 4) and have them do a full member test. The test will include a battery and starter test and make sure you get a print out or have them email the test to you. Tell us what the cranking voltage, current and starter time look like. You can get this done elsewhere, but I don't work elsewhere so I can't tell you what they test for at other places. You'll also get the scoop on what the battery life is like. don't just go off half cocked and start replacing parts like the battery until you know if it's good or not. I did a full member test on my FR-S last week and this is what I got (new car just off the lot) Starting Test Starter Decision: NORMAL Cranking Voltage: 10.84V Cranking Current: 176.4A Starting Time: 0.78s Loop ohms: 0.0 Ω |
