Thoughts on license plate mounted wing
Hiya folks,
I saw the Revolution Japan GT Wing ![]() and I really love the style and looks of it for some reason. Anyways, this wing retails for about $2500USD, which I think is insane, so I am tempted to build my own. I started mocking it up with poster board last night after doing some cad drawings and I am liking how it looks so far (I should note that I am only building the legs and mount, the blade will be purchased elsewhere.) My questions are, how effective would this be? The way I have designed mine it will use a solid mount system of 1/4 aluminum from both sides of the trunk with 1/4 bolts to ensure it isnt going to rip off. The backing plate inside the trunk will secure in a few different places to add some rigidity to the back of the trunk. The way the legs wrap up over the trunk will position the blade right over the top similar to where a normal wing would sit. I've heard quite a few arguments for an against this style of wing, but nothing relating to 86s. Any engineers want to chime in before I waste my time haha.

Define "effective"...
Any wing not directly bolted to the chassis of the car is not effective for racing purposes. The nice thing about this wing is that it does not involve drilling holes in the trunk. However, keep in mind how flimsy the stock license plate holes are, and how only two holes are supposed to keep in check downforce in excess of 300lbs if you go fast enough. -alex |

Use the data as a reference point. At 80MPH the APR GTC200 wing produces almost 80lbs of downforce at 0 AoA. Imagine your mounting point, now mount 80lbs of weight on there. Go up to 120lbs for 12 degrees AoA. Go up to 200lbs for 12 degrees AoA to simulate 100MPH. Now see how much your trunk flexes, and whether you want to buy a new trunk later or not. This is just the GTC200. Larger wings with more complex elements could produce more downforce. Bottom line is, if you want a wing, mount it on top of the trunk. Less chance of deformation and more area to spread out load. -alex |

Even with no wing our cars have enough down force. So adding this would be just for looks or if you want the air pressure to slow you down with this on. A wing like this is detrimental. Mounting this in that spot will bend that metal. I think this is made for CF trunk lids.Is your car a DD? Or you setting it up as a track only car?

When done properly, they work. Seen em on MKIV Supras a couple of times, they only install them for track use and remove them on the street.

Have a look at the reinforcement "plate" used for this wing and see if you'd want to just hang it off the back of the trunk

I'm all for big wings and they do(when properly designed) create down force which is beneficial at higher speeds. The people who think they look silly always say they are worthless/just for show etc but like was said above... The APR wing makes 80lbs at 80mph. Voltex uses a wind tunnel for testing so their products are legit hence the monster price tag. HOWEVER if you don't put it in the right place with the right angle it won't do much if anything(or you just won't know if it is or not since you may get lucky). The license plate mount is clever as fuck but I could see it trying to deform. A backing plate will likely help but be prepared to replace your trunk just in case. Good luck!

If your car is a DD and weekend show car that is totally the wing to get.
If you actually want it functional I'd say no
