Cruise control temporarily disabled?
I hit 1500 miles yesterday and at that same time my cruise control activation light lit up yellow and I was unable to use my cruise control. I turned the car off and then back on and everything was fine again. Anyone else experience this?

Ok... What did you hit on the car while driving at 48mph, low on gas, and taking a picture of your instrument panel? Maybe your car decided cruise control was not what you needed at that moment.

ashtray, if you can tell me what I could have possibly "hit with my knee" to cause this to happen then I will consider you intelligent. Until then you just crossed below the intelligence threshold for me to notice you anymore.
If anyone else has had this happen then post up. If not, why not just pretend you don't need to post anything.

Darren, I had it happen to me yesterday morning on my way to work. I was baffled, but I'll explain what was going on before mine went "Yellow" and wouldn't turn on/off or function.
It was a little chilly, 41 degrees and dry roads. After a majority of my commute, my fluids were all at operating temperature. Since it was Sunday, there were quite a lot of deserted roadways at 5am. I normally drive with TCS/ESC off, as was the case on this morning. After turning left from a stop sign, I ran through 1st, got a pretty "big" chirp into 2nd, and got a "lil" chirp into 3rd (enough to kick the rear out a smidge). Once I let off of the accelerator and resumed cruising, I noticed the yellow cruise control light and inability to turn it on/off etc. I'm not sure if running through the gears had anything to do with it, but that is what happened immediately prior to the occurrence of the "yellow cruise control light" PS... Having been on these forums for a while and seeing the responses of people, I'm fully aware of the "dangers" of driving with ESC/TCS off, but I'm not worried about a 200bhp car being "too much to handle". Yes WOT runs are irresponsible and shouldn't be done on public roads but we're all car guys and give in to the temptation for spirited driving on occasion.

I've had it happen once also. Similar conditions to above. Traction control off, VSC off. Cruise control on and some spirited driving that involved rear wheels being slide happy. Looked down and noticed the cruise indicator had turned yellow. Pulled over and shut the car off and re-started and it reset.

Interesting.
I have to admit that this is the most electronically controlled car I have ever owned, hence I cant really compare it to anything else. Previous car did not even have ABS. What I have noticed is that I am still not clear on who is driving this car; me or the computer. When I originally got the bug to buy this car, I never dreamed that the wonderful handling was going to be balanced by an endlessly annoying electronic personality. This car really is the beautiful chick that you can't stand! |

The following is speculation, just an educated guess.
It may be that when the ECU receives data indicating wheel slip, it shuts the cruise control option OFF. The ECU doesn’t know whether this slip was driver generated or the result of slippery road surfaces where it is considered inadvisable to activate cruise control. The highway patrol reports many single-car crashes resulting from drivers employing cruise control in rain, snow, and ice conditions. The general recommendation is to turn cruise control OFF in these conditions. One does not want the cruise control spinning wheels as the tires hydroplane or cross a patch of snow and ice; this could suddenly snap a car left or right, catching out an inattentive driver and putting him off the road. He, or his lawyer, is likely to blame the car. I think this ECU programming would be a sensible and clever method of protecting both the less-skilled driver, and the company itself from potential lawsuits arising from crashes. This impresses me as an excellent design feature if it is true. |

The issue with all this computer generated control is that it is much like Government services:
Before the Government can give you anything, first hey have to take it away from you". I feel the same way about the endless electrical interference from the FRS. First annoying car I have ever owned; it seems impossible to drive this car without some retarded light beeping for some stupid reason or other. I also realize that it is here to stay regardless of what I buy. |
