Timing belts suck
I'm so glad my brz has a timing chain. I bought a used Kia and the &@*!@#*$!! belt broke in the driveway, trashed both heads & maybe even the pistons. Now my son's Honda threw a belt and it's probably toast too. Takes a car's value from the thousands straight down into the hundreds. What the hell? If you're going to build an interference engine, then USE A CHAIN!!! Even I'm not that stupid...

You're not that stupid....but you didn't change the timing belt? The change interval is listed right in the owner's manual...

Ya, like I said in another thread I ignored the interval, warning squeal, drop off in power and rough idle on my old Talon and blew the engines apart so bad there were pieces embedded in the pieces of the pieces. Totally my own fault since it gave me warning days before it finally let go completely and I figured "ah it can wait until the weekend I will just go easy".

I will add a story while I am here. My buddys z31 300zx went though a mud pit apparently and he decided to give it some gas and apparently the belt slipped and now his car won't run so it has sat in a driveway for 3 years now

The Kia was one I had just bought for next to nothing because it had an oil leak. Owned it 3 days before the belt slipped. The other car is my son's. He's 27 now and I don't keep up with maintenance on his car anymore.

323k on my Toyota pickup with timing chain. So happy!
I had timing belt snap on Golden Gate bridge years back on a Ford Ranger. ...pos. was going 45mph. Scary!

I'm glad my F150 has no timing belt or timing chain. The service interval is NEVER.
Timing chains have a service interval as well. They may be called "lifetime" chains, but that's because manufacturers know that no one gives a damn after 10 years / 300,000 miles. That's what "lifetime" means in the auto world. |

My '85 MR2 popped it's timing belt twice, almost exactly 5,000 miles before the 60,000 mile change interval, no warning. Fortunately no damage both times.

Timing belts = more maintenance profit for dealers and that is why new cars are so cheap and the profits are made on parts and service.

I still remember the squeal of my old timing belt...hate that sound! Always change it according to the maintenance schedule!
