It's buildup from you letting the system go dry.

Mavs got it right, you should probably flush the coolant and replace with OEM or go the evans waterless coolant route.

So it's normal? So I should just regularly check to make sure the coolant levels are good and the aliens will go away lol

In my experience the dots are from
  • Low coolant (check it more often!)
  • Mixing different colants
  • water that is contaminated (such as rich in minerals)
  • Coolant that is a bit worn down or picked up debris from radiator

I would do a coolant flush (aka radiator flush) and every time I would add water, id make sure it was distilled.

Do you drive your car often? Maybe it's just settled debris.

Have you watched South Park regularly ? And season 19 totally ruled !
Season 19 Episode 4 'You're Not Yelping'. And for those of you in a hurry, it's last two minutes of that show...'The Yelper's Special'.

When a restaurant server gets complaints about the food, must take it back to the kitchen, there's no telling what he/she will do with the food once in the kitchen, before it goes back to the customer.

Possibly a factory worker did the same to your cooling system.

It may just be buildup at the top of the water neck. Just make sure that 1) your radiator cap is working properly (spring is not stuck), and 2) your overflow tank is not dry.

Minor buildup is not an issue, but over time it will slowly reduce the efficiency of your cooling system.

And as others have said, whatever you do don't just fill it with tap water.

You should check coolant fairly regularly as aliens come in the night to drink coolant. If you see one sipping your coolant shoot on site

Check it every other week. Check radiator cap and also reservoir.

Don't forget to pressure check tires monthly, oil weekly (imo) and just do a simple walk around your car.

Have the same, wiped it out, will flush at 60k miles which should be about 4-5 years of ownerships, nice to know it was from the time my reservoir was dry.
