Painted Stock Wheels - Graphite
Couldn't stand the stock wheels and didn't have enough money for new ones so i decided to paint them. After a long sanding process (took 2 1/2 to 3 hours), I used Rustoleum primer, VHT Graphite wheel paint and Dupli-color clear coat. Pretty happy with the results!
Also won't be washing them for at least a week so sorry if they're a bit dirty. |

That looks great! Would love to do the same to my wheels. What grit sand paper did you use and how many coats of paint?

Thank you!! I used a cup brush (attaches to a driver), followed by 320 grit and then 1000 grit to smooth it out. 3 coats of primer, 2-3 coats of color, and 2-3 of clearcoat.

Nice cup brush that's a good idea I'll keep that in mind.

Great job! Looks a million times better than how the wheels look stock.

This is the color they should've come in, I hate the two-tone stock ones.

You probably don't need to go any finer than 400 grit before primer, and 800 grit if you need to smooth out after primer.

I pained my IS300 rims with a very similar process. Took me a full weekend of basically working on it all day both days. Cleaning and sanding was the hardest part. I used Dupli-Color for the primer, base and clear on mine. Did 3 coats of each. My IS300 is black and I also went with graphite. It came out really nice and held up fine for the past year. The only problem I have with mine is at the lip of the rim. If you aren’t taking the tires off it’s hard to clean the lip and also hard to get a good coat on the lip. So my rims now have the original surface coming through just a tad. Not that noticeable unless you get close. But the main surfaces still look perfect. Nice gloss finish still.
To really do this job right I would say you need to do it with the tires off. I like how the FRS rims look in graphite. I may have to do this on mine the next time I am due for tires. |
