Hello fellow GT86/BRZ/FR-S Drivers, I am from the german gt86drivers.de-forum and just stumbled over this excellent forum as well. Big props to the guys who made that chart with the wheel sizes and proper pictures with mounted rims!

So what I am looking for is sort of having extraordinary rims on the gt86. Please don't stone me for my choice of flavor, but I seem to really like the Dotz Fast Seven or Dotz Hanzo on my grey GT86

There is a technical approval for both of them, however, it also includes the requirement by german TUEV to roll out/bend the fenders as well as bend the latch back (?) that holds the rear skirt (sorry for my bad english, has been a while :P ).
This does not seem to be the case when I look at the chart I found at this forum... so I wonder, could I install any of these two babies on my gt86 without having to do ANY body work at all? I dont want to do body work on a new produced car with fresh paint :P Can anybody help me?

Both Dotz are 8x17 with ET32 offset.

I would put any rubber on it as well... only if it would prevent bodywork!

A 8" wide +32 isn't too bad. No problem on rear. Flush to 10mm on front fender. If wider than 255mm tire you may need to roll body.

I don't believe you will have issue with these sizes.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the hope, friend!

Still, I dont understand why even with the 215/40 R17 wheels it clearly states in the technical documents that the body needs to be rolled or even bent... would suck to buy these babys for one grand and then have to be forced to do body work on a newly produced car... :/ and what i also dont understand - considering the chart with the wheel sizes, the same rims in 18" would fit better...?!

I don't understand either, and 18" would fit the same.

7-8" wide wheel 20-45mm fit without issue on most tire.

I know an 8" +60 rubs inner (strut) but that is the other way than you are concerned. An 8" wouldn't need a fender roll/bender until +15, +20, etc. 32 is still a little bit inside. Few mm.

yeah i am confused as well, have never been into this topic before... in the technical documents it says the wheel width has still to be inside the body with the maximum possible complete wheel width being 1.04 times the regular measured size (maybe due to lesser pressure?). If I count that in, its 625.13 regular size with -13.5 from perfect flush. So if i understand right, if i count 625.13 times 1.04 i result in 650.14 total wheel width at maximum possible width. this means the wheel is 25.01 more wide, if i take half of it (12,51), its still nearly 1mm away from perfect flush ==> thus, there should be no body work needed!

... why the hell does the technical document say otherwise...

(this calculation was done considering 215/45 R17 standard wheel size)

EDIT: OK, I'm stupid. Of course the width is what matters and not the diameter. So what do I use? 215mm? Then it would be still good. Or does the technical document mean the LOWER ends of the fenders which are way more into the body than the upper part..?

I am VERY tempted by the BF Goodrich G-Force Rival tire in 225/45/17. They are only cost a little bit more than the Nitto NT05 and may be a better tire and it certainly seems that they may be longer lasting.

I am also now considering the Advan TCII wheel in 17x8.5. Just a little heavier, but it is built to be durable on the track. Downsides? It is a bit more expensive, at about the same price as the O.Z. Alleggerita HLT.

Why does an 8.5" wheel make sense:
Tire size 225/45/17, recommended rim 7-8.5
Tire size 235/40/17, recommended rim 8-9.5
Tire size 245/40/17, recommended rim 8-9.5

The 8.5" rim is in the recommended range for all of these tire sizes.

@Black Tire,

See this thread regarding tire width.

http://www.ft86club.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32423

Cliffs: an autox car will generally run a wider tire/wheel than a track car.

This is a good option too, it's weird that most people with 17's have 9" width and most 18's are 8" width. I guess thats just what's available there are very few 18x9's out there and they would be getting up there in weight also.
you see 17x9 as a common size because 9'' is the widest and only stock diameter wheels are allowed in STX class.

autox cars are set up differently than track cars. just because it's advantageous for an autox car, doesn't mean it's advantageous for a track car.

That's an important point. The wheels, tires, and suspension options you see praised are biased by the type of racing each person is tailoring their car to be competitive in. What's best on a technical 60 second autocross course with several minutes of cool down between laps won't necessarily carry over to multiple laps of an acceleration based road course with higher speeds. It's obvious to spot the differences between a drag car and an autocross car, but road course driving is closer to autocross while being somewhere in between.

We currently have 2 different setups: 225/45/17 RS3 on 17x8 +45 and 235/40/17 RC-1 on 17x9 +35.

The wheel setup will be based on what you do now, in the future, and in the distant future.

Will 17x9 +42, will +30 Rota Grids fit safely with all the stock components, even with hard cornering/full lock? What about 18x8.5 +44?

What tire size should I be looking at for safe fitment? Thanks!
