Reading this post made me think. Grats on the Kid first hand.

When I talk to my father about his car history, he always regrets getting rid of his toys of the time. He had three 1970 Pontiac GTO's. He sold two of them before I was born. He kept his last one after my sister was born and even put the car seats in the back seats. But he sold it when we moved and said this to me. " I sold it because I didn't want you to died." when I was 16. When I was 18, he said "I wished I never sold my GTO." Granted it was American Muscle and not an import, he loved the car so much. He had to get rid of his land rovers when he got into accident in all three of them.

But he told me to keep the Suzuki in the family. (I don't care what you said about Suzuki, it is a perfect reliable car. Every car is if you take care of it.) So I plan to use that car when I have kids and hopefully pass it down to them. While I have the "Sport" car in the family :-)

Sounds like your wife is a keeper for sure, and congrats on the kid. I have three and it is amazing how fast your priorities change once you hold that infant in your arms. Sucks about the car, but it is just a car.

Push her so hard to have an abortion that she wants to divorce you.

Seriously, though, tell her the financial loss of selling it is not in the family's/baby's best interest. Get a copy of the crash test ratings for her.

He doesn't have a problem with the wife, and she was entirely on-board with the FR-S purchase. Pregnancy was a surprise and the OP's just trying to figure out the best way to deal with his impending transportation requirements.

I do not understand why you are even asking questions about compatibility of car, wife, child?!

Your child is not an elephant and your new car is more than adequate for your child. Tens of millions of people right here in USA drive around with small cars and babies and they all seem to be doing quite fine. I do not see how you can raise issues about what you just bought.

For starters FRS is probably a little more safer and definitely more reliable than your old car. On top of it FRS is equipped with all kids of airbags and baby car seat restraint system.

Most people who own small cars pull passenger seat forward and drop in a child seat. Strap the seat using seatbelts and put baby in child seat cradle etc etc etc. Most babies sleep in the car anyways so traveling should not be an issue. If you are traveling "together" then your lady would be seating next to the baby in the back seat with front seat slid forward. Problem solved.

On a financial note you would be losing at least 40% if you were to try and sell right now. Considering that economy is iffy... many banks stopped issuing personal loans left and right which means that your chances of successfully selling to private party in this economy are rather slim and dealers will eat you for breakfast during trade in. Nowadays crowd capable of obtaining a loan for say $25,000 on a used car... would probably do so through a car dealership.

Keep the car, keep the dreams and let your woman deal with it. Nothing about your situation is dire so both of you can adapt.

Heck if I was able to fit 11 year old and 12 year old and 2 other adults into my 1994 celica coupe then you can fit a tiny baby in your vehicle.

Pretend to sell the car (hide it at a friend's), tell her you got a lifetime bus pass. Then when she complains, tell her you can still get the FR-S that you originally purchased.

It will seem like her idea, she will love it!

Or spend small change on a real, crappy car and tell her that is all you could get right now.

You get the idea. Just make it seem like it is her idea to keep the FR-S.

I don't get this ridiculous reason for driving a 27 passenger suv just because someone has kids. Not saying that's what's going on here BUT you see it all the time.

Oh a baby is on the way? Time to sell the Altima for a GMC Yukon Denali XXL w/ the 17.6L V18 engine......

My mother raised my brother and I on her own. She did it all with a 1995 Corolla. Fully laden trips to the beach worked out just fine. Small cars can carry a lot if one knows how to pack properly.

As for selling the car you should sell the aftermarket parts separately and sell the vehicle as close to stock as you can get it. Hope you kept all the OEM parts.

That will get you out with the minimum amount of financial loss.

Reminds me of a story.

When I was 10 my Mom was pregnant with my youngest sister. Thanksgiving morning my Dad wakes me up about 4:00am my Dad wakes me up to tell me our hunting trip wasn't gonna happen because he was taking my Mom to the hospital.

Only problem, our only vehicle was in the backyard with its engine on a hoist as he was in the process of swapping it out.

My Aunt and Uncle show up about 5 minutes later with the only car they had, an '65 MG Midget MkII, to take my Mom to the hospital. They had to put the top down, and my Uncle and Dad lifted my Mom into the car over the door for the trip to the hospital, about 20 miles away.

We still retell that story at most family gatherings 40 years later.

I think the money one would lose in selling the FRS and parts now, will be much more than just buying another used car that you can use with kids....

I mean, if you sold the car now, you'd lose probably about $5000 on it, and then lose another 3-4,000 on the parts you bought. For $7000, you can find a Scion xB or similar car that can get you to places with family for not much more cost each month in insurance and maintenance, at least not till your kid grows to 16 and get his/her own license for you to insure.

But like any couple, I guess what you are describing and what I am saying, are indeed, two different things.
And if that is what it's gonna take to save your wife's sanity, then I guess you'd have to off with the FRS?
