You do have a valid point, this does need to be properly engineered. Keep in mind that is basically a Miata grafted under a Volvo and hence there is plenty of basic structure to work with. Also, its going to be a cruiser, not a slalom car, so we are not needing the stiffest structure on the planet. If it is as good as the Volvo was from the factory, I will be content.

Targa top to at least keep some horizontal rigity, if it doesn't, it'll probably feel like a different car. If not targa, I'd probably go Miata, it looks really good for the new gen.

Two seats. Relatively good power to weight ratio with a max weight under 3000lb, and RWD are the bare essentials of being a sports-car.

Agreed. That is way too broad. A Chrysler 200 AWD fits his definition by having the Pentastar and AWD. There aren't many AWD cars out there that I'd consider a sports car to be honest. Even most AWD 911s are edging more GT than sports cars IMO.

I'm hesitant to call the FR-S a sports car because the coupe shape clearly exists for practicality's sake. If the FR-S had a coupe profile more like an RX7, was a couple hundred pounds lighter (basically more focused), I'd be more inclined to call it an actual sports car. Sports coupe is an accurate definition for the BRZ/FR-S. Something like a Civic Si would be a sport compact (despite being a sporty coupe... haha).

Having just spent $1,600 to have the convertible top replaced on MomHawk's '05 Mustang, I have no desire to EVER buy a convertible again. Of course, her next car will be a convertible....

My preference would be:

Targa/Louvers > Targa > Louvers> More Power > Stretched More Back Legroom > any other modification > any other car > Convertible

Without getting into the unfordable or exotic, there are a fewexamples that are in production. Since you want "New" I will toss in a likely candidate from Alpha that marries a Miata to an Italian stylist. And for sure...Miata continuesto locate itself square in the middle of "Sports Car" definition, proving that the niche definition is right by succeeding for 25 years.

I think the 3000lbs is arbitrary. A corvette, for example, is a bonafide sports car but it is just over 3000lbs.
