It took about 5 months, though. I bought the STI in April and started having doubts about it in May. Saw the Chris Harris videos in late June/ early July. Took my first test drive in a BRZ in mid July. After much drooling at 86's, and wincing every time I had to fill up the STI ( < 260 miles range with normal driving on a 16 gallon tank and filling up at least 14-15 gallons each fill-up just hurts... badly. I don't care how fast the car is), I started looking at a potential RWD successor to the STI. I had on my list: BRZ/FR-S, Miata, 350Z. It's now early November.

I wasn't able to test drive a Miata, b/c there were NO used (wasn't willing to buy new... they were going for around $30k new) manual Miatas available for sale in AZ... at all. But the 350Z was underwhelming, actually.

I took a nice long test drive in a series 10 FR-S and had a ball. Then test drove a BRZ to see if I could detect a difference (unfortunately rush hour hit about that time and the Subaru dealership didn't want me to take it too far). I couldn't, but I ended up taking that BRZ home the next day.

It really was an agonizing decision considering that the STI was what I'd thought my dream car was, and I'd had it only 7 months. But even with being upside down in the trade, my monthlies are still less than they were for the STI, insurance is less, and gas is a helluva lot less, even though I'm sucking fumes by 300 miles (that 13.2 gal tank really is tiny). I love it!

Honestly...an STi. I originally walked in to get one of them....Subie said we they were not getting any new ones for 3 more months....Happened to be the same time the BRZ would come in, so I walked next door to the Scion dealership.

If the BRZ never existed...

If the Twins didn't exist I would probably still have my S2000, or possibly a 5 door WRX, or even a Cayman S; I considered both of those seriously.

On the flip side, after replacing my wrecked supercharged BRZ with a Cayman S I am much happier and wish I had just done this in the first place.

Other than gas mileage (before supercharging) and the fold down seats this car is superior in every way. Maintenance expenses are overblown and my Cayman's insurance is even less than my BRZ's

I'm still single with no kids so to hell with it I bought a Porsche. I intend to keep this car forever and pass it down to my son one day (If I'm fortunate enough to be in such a position).

If the BRZ never existed...

I'd still be a driving my '04 Mazda RX-8 that chugged oil, ate through batteries and had to be jumped if she wasn't started for a day. Not that I didn't love her, I swear I would have driven her until her wheels fell off, but unfortunately I think the wheels would have been the last thing to go on that poor car. Rotary problems, ya know?

[[Just trying to get to 10 posts so I can "thank" people. This makes 8. ]] Wooo.

I had my search narrowed down to the BRZ vs. a '12 Mustang GT, so I would have likely jumped on the latter. If I had more time/patience to search for one, I would have liked to drive an S2000, and if I had more financial sense I would have picked up a Golf R (or waited for the MKVII GTI) or just kept my Rabbit and played with it a bit more.

A Cayman would have been an amazing buy but I'm just not mechanically inclined (nor swimming in cash) so I wasn't willing to take the risk.

Honestly, there is nothing new that compares to this platform.

-Inexpensive
-Stylish
-Great Chassis
-Adequate Power
-Good Gas Mileage
-A Useable trunk
-Good/Comfortable Interior

I had no intention on replacing my 2012 Rubicon until I made the mistake of taking the FRS for a joy ride. On another note, my wife won't let me bring the cars in for servicing anymore due to my inability to sit and wait patiently.

I fixed that problem. I kept my 2004 Rubi and let my dad drive it so it is available when I need my Jeep fix or there is a foot of snow on the orad.

Looked at the Hyundai Veloster, Mustang w/V6 track pack, Kia Forte Koup (10 yr. 100,000 warranty how can you beat that?) or maybe fixed my PT Cruiser. BRZ replaced a totaled Pontiac G5 GT.

Probably would be finish with my R34 GTR vspec2 and financed a E92 M3 for daily commute or waited for the new 2 series to be released.

If I had any family members willing to do that, I would have loved to. I do miss my Rubicon though not going to lie. The only thing I don't miss about it was the MPG.

The only car I was seriously considering was a used NC miata (because NA would require modification for me to daily drive it (race seats that would allow me to fit properly in it - and I wanted a newer daily driver I didn't have to modify to fit in) even though I do not like convertibles (I could live with gutting the entire convertible mechanism and permanently installing a hardtop though.) I had heard about the FT86 project and followed it about a year before the the BRZ/FRS release. What really got me excited for it was the Chris Harris video... after seeing that I had to test drive one! And well, the rest is history...
