Would have kept my '13 STI if the BRZ/FR-S didn't exist. If it simply became too expensive, I'd probably have gone back to a WRX or figured something else out.
What first pegged me to the BRZ were the STI owners jumping ship to the twins happily, and these weren't "kept the car stock" or "blew up my STI" types, but guys with some serious power and performance builds and absolutely gorgeous machines. Jumping ship. To a little car that had half or less the HP their AWD monsters were putting down on the dyno. And they were stupidly happy about it too. This just made not much sense. Then there were the Chris Harris review videos. Those pretty much convinced me that I had to take a test drive or two in a BRZ to see just what the hell the deal with this car was. It was eye opening. The car was ticking boxes I didn't even know I had b/c my STI (and the WRX before it) just never touched upon them except when doing happy things like kicking up the dust off road. After a while the cost of owning the STI and my realization that the twins was the car I had actually wanted all along pushed me into "this is srs business" mode and got me into a BRZ for good.

C63 AMG
I almost bought one just before buying my brz. But it meant giving up my STI which I had a hard time with at the time. After owning and driving the BRZ I ended up selling the STI anyways. Still want a Mercedes... |

I was gonna get a BMW 740iL (like late 1990s/early 2000's, whatever you call that generation), for cruising and having room to put stuff in it. And I just love how those cars look, one of the best looking ever. But then I learned more and more about the FRS, and test drove it, and realized that it was the car I really wanted. Lol it has decent room when you fold the rear seats down anyway lol.

The galaxy gray lost compression , and had it's motor "fully replaced" (turned out to be a lie, I feel the entire car is a lemon due to it's previous owner as it's gear box is trashed, and a few other things) and the owner of the phantom blue wrecked his car acting a fool during a local cruise, replaced the radiator(along with a few other things), and tried selling the car because the motor wouldn't turn over (I'm assuming he flooded it , seeing how the guy really didn't seem to know anything about taking care of a rotary).. and yea 16mpg is what kept me from looking for a used r3 rx8 when I purchased my fr-s ... I love the rotary , but I will never own one as a daily driver. Hopefully one day I can buy a clean fd and try to replicate a LHD spirit r type A

I'd probably still be in my 2008 135i or else a Miata.

I planned to get a new car some time after July 2012 and was doing a lot of thinking about what I wanted before the twins were announced. I was thinking about an economy car that was sporty and performance/handling oriented, and looked cool. Possibles were the Civic S, VW GTI, Hyundai Veloster Turbo, WRX, Elantra or Sonata (meh, but my son bought a Sonata and I like it), 370Z, Mazdaspeed 3, Miata MX-5, and Kia Optima.
After some reading on all those, my prime choices were probably the Mazdaspeed 3 or the WRX. I like the looks of the Veloster, but handling and performance-wise the reviews said it was pretty much crap. I preferred AWD or RWD to FWD. What I really really wanted was a C5 or C6 Corvette, Porsche Cayman S or a 911. But we have to be realistic LOL. Then the BRZ/FR-S was announced. It caught my attention immediately. When it hit the streets and I read some reviews, I was hooked. There's one in my garage now.

Oddly enough, if I didn't get the FR-S, I would have traded in my impreza for a 2013 (if I could find one) or a 2014 Forester XT. It was a choice between practical family vehicle that's still fun for daddy or my toy. WRX would've been a no-go since my wife deems the impreza too small now that she has her Forester.

Nope, kept the Impreza, got the FR-S. Best of both worlds I guess? The Impreza only has 102k on it, so here's to hoping it goes another 50-100k. Sorry, should have been a tad more clear.
