Actually, according to Subaru...

Ring-shaped Reinforcement Frames

The SUBARU BRZ offers intense control and just as intense protection. Its frame design strengthens the passenger cabin from the roof to the doors, pillars and floor. This design, bolstered by generous use of high-tensile steel, helps to dissipate impact energy away from the occupants in a collision.

Just saying...

Most wrecked Subie pics, you can see where they had to cut around the b-pillar. It's not a great picture, but it looks like they cut right through. There is apparently a hoop there, but it may not be 7 layers of laser welded steel surrounding a 1" rebar loop that I've grown accustomed to.

Its never safe to race on the street in any car. It does not matter if you have a Ferrari or a Tercel. If you go fast enough and crash you can and probably will be hurt or killed and hurt or kill someone else.

Don't get stupid on the street. Your ego should not be that fragile that some guy you probably don't even know can goad you into stupidity.

Sucks to see it but there are similar posts and pictures on almost every forum of every make out there.

bleh i don't want to be an asshole but given the circumstances and odds that it was due to street racing or some other sort of pissing contest, I don't pity/sympathize or have any 'aww poor you, i hope you're alright' feelings for the people in this crash (maybe the passengers a liiiitle)

Don't get into disputes that will pose a risk to you if you choose to take part (eg, don't try to race people on the street).
Often times people succumb to this kind of thing BECAUSE they have friends in the car and either A. want to show off; or B. are egged on by their stupid companions.

Now if he got squashed by a truck or something and he had right of way, then yes, I hope he's alright. But if he was doing dumb shit, serves him right.

Alas all we can do is speculate.

I thought that was the point of the Jaws of Life - to be able to cut through anything. Been with my kids 3rd grade field trip to a firefighter safety show and they chopped a old crown vic in half.

Yeah in the picture before the jaws of life were used you can see the ring structure survived. The whole point of the jaws of life is to cut through the pillars so the roof can be peeled back.

Yeah I tried to find some news on it but couldn't. Fatal accidents will get the insurance companies' mouths watering for sure.

It is, but if you look back to 2002, you will find that the 2002 WRX was the first Subaru B-pillar to thwart the jaws of life. Special techniques were developed for new Subaru vehicles within 6 months. It involved cutting to either side of the b-pillar, and detaching the roof from that structure. It was the diagrams distributed with the new rescue procedures that actually exposed the roll structure Subaru utilized.

Look at pictures of rolled WRXs, STIs, Forresters, and Legacys. You will see that even with the roof peeled back, the roll hoop is still in place. Many examples, the roof itself will peel back in the accident, but the hoop will still be there.

possibilities:

1) The jaws of life have become substantially beefier in the last 10 years.

2) Toyota roll structure isn't as beefy as Subarus. The Subaru hoop would lead to more weight up high in the car, and be detrimental to the low CoG target.

3) The picture isn't clear enough, and I'm fretting over nothing.

Only antibiotics at the moment.

The A-pillar is irrelevant, as it isn't nearly as reinforced as the B-pillar on Subarus. The jaws of life will cut through A-pillars of a Subaru without issue.

EDIT: Most of the old articles are gone or paywalled now. Looks like some cutters are catching up to Subaru and BMW.
