Show me any insider saying it is a celica.

Show me any reporter asking if its going to be called something specifically, other than a celica. (ie, is this the next supra? etc.)

None. You're establishing that fact off one article shown so far, in which Tada was replying to the question about it being called a Celica. And he said "its a possibility".

It didn't go "So whats the car gonna be called?"
"Celica, its a possibility."

Now that holds 100x more weight than what was actually shown.

lol seriously i think you guys are just arguing for the sake of arguing. jordo never said that celica was the official name of the car. he just said it seems more likely than other names because tada-san mentioned that it was one of the possibilities. tada-san didn't mention any other possibilities by name but honestly, at this point anything is possible. i'm not completely turned off by the celica name like a lot of you guys are, but i'm not huge supporter of it either. i'd be more turned off if they called it scion tC.

Hey, I'm not pickin' on Jordo. I just asked everyone to enlighten my confusion. Jordon was nicely enough to answer my Qs.

but then we run the risk of something happening like what happened when NASA let the public choose the name for the new space station module.

I misremembered the specific article, but here's what I'm referring to:

"The show-car’s FT86 name is a reference to the AE86, by the way, but Tada says the production car might be called Celica."

http://www.motortrend.com/auto_news/112_0910_toyota_ft_86_could_get_celica_name/index.html

I thought I had seen it elsewhere too, but Celica is the only name that's been suggested. If they mentioned another I must have missed it...

Oh, yeah -- also here:

"When it comes to the name the car will wear when it is released, Tada was equally non-committal. Indeed, when quizzed on a possible return of the Celica badge, he stated matter of factly: "I won't say the possibility is nil, but nothing is decided at the moment."

http://www.carsales.com.au/news/2009...adge-yet-17144

So hardly a done deal, but it's not as if another name has been offered.

Maybe someone needs to ask him about another nameplate

Maybe in rally? No Citroen, Peugeot (of course Subie & Mitsu too) own the place. Last Toyota won was w Corolla (in '99).
Maybe in drag? NHRA did Funny Car class and had Celica... but other big engine own the place. Supra is only one that they can take em on. Maybe in GT? No, they all been replaced with Supra. Maybe in drifting... Nope, AE86 & Supra is seen more (in JP Chaser & Mark is seen more for Toyota). Celica is father of Supra? No, 2000GT is father of Supra.

So Celica fan here, please enlighten me. I don't get it
Ok, so let's start the history lesson.

TTE RA20 Celica (really hard to find info and pics on this car, be my guest to try)

IMSA GTU Celica ('83-'86, 8 wins, 13 poles, 11 track records)

IMSA GTO Celica (16 wins '85-'88, 1987 champ, more race wins in '88 than any other car)

DRM Group 5 Schnitzer Celica (Yes, that Schnitzer) aka Celica LB Turbo

DRM is the predecessor to DTM

Group B Celica (Won it's second rally, as well as 6 rallies on the african continent -including 3 consecutive safari rallies from 83-86- ... earning it the nickname "king of the desert")

ST165 WRC Celica GT4 (1 WRC drivers championship, at least 16 wins from 1988-1991)

ST185 WRC Celica GT4 (3 WRC drivers championships, 2 WRC manufacturer championships, at least 18 wins from 1992-1994)

ST205 WRC Celica GT4 (1WRC Manufacturer Championship, 3 wins 1996)

Pikes Peak Celica (held the pikes peak record for 13 years)

Super GT Celicas

Didn't bother to mention the nationwide cup celicas, NHRA celicas, and Celicas that race in regional categories.....

Just felt I needed to clear that up. Carry on.

wow a lot of history. Sad that most of the rally history is around the time I was born, so I had no clue on (sorry). BUT I did search bit more on WRC and yeah, Celica did win the series ('93 & '94). Yes, Rod Millen did have rec til Tajima-san beat it with Suzuki in '07. Rhys Millen try to get it back, but couldn't do with his Genesis.

As for WedSport Celica, I've completely forgotten about that. Orido-san use to drive for that company (in '98, '99, & '08). It's sad that they change the regulation of conversion. Either way it was pretty much Supra drivetrain anyways. For other: Project Mu (pic is '04 edi) stop GT300. WedSport change to IS350, Espelir change to IS430. Anyway, they all didn't win any series in JGTC (both in Drivers & Team).

Anyways, thanks for the info I learned something. I guess, Celica had some rec in the past.
