quoting white comet takahashi ryosuke in another thread, check it out.
in regards to this thread heres my opinion:
Trueno=sexy name. use it!
Celica= Silly car

A new name aint such a bad idea given its futuristic design but remember its the spiritual successor of the AE86.

This picture just made my day... LOL!!

I hope it's not badged a Scion... or a Celica/Corolla. Hopefully something new, but reminiscent of the old... We've seen the Supra name separated from the original Celica - Supra grade. We've seen the FJ Cruiser return with its chassis designation.

I'd suggest the following:
Toyota GTS
Toyota 86-GTS or GTS-E86

It can have follow up "tribute" models as well... GT-A70/80 (Supra) amongsts others

At the very least, I hope it is badged a Toyota...

+1 on the toyota badge. GTS is pretty catchy. Or something with 86 would work for me.

This car will not be named for a small group of fans. It will be named according whatever Toyota deems the mass market will most recognize and or appreciate...

Go find a bunch of non-car guys and girls and ask them the poll... the name you hear most is probably going to be the new name.

The fact that most media sources and also Tada have mentioned "Celica", the most recongizable of any name they could legitiamtely give the car, means that will most likely be the name it receives.

While it is certainly possible that it could get something different, I'd say it isn't very likely.

Says the Celica fan.

Naming it a Celica does NOTHING to redo Toyota's image to the mass. All the name 'Celica' evokes, from the mass market, is subpar FWD secretary car that faded without so much as a whimper. The days of the Celica's true sportiness (early 90's for the All-trac, and pre 1986 in its RWD form) are long gone in Joe Regular's memory. Only enthusiasts know of the Celica's true heritage.

Expect this car to receive a badging no one knows about because it will be completely new and original. A new type of car for a new design philosophy by Toyota, receiving its own unique badge.

I'm not saying FT-86 shouldn't have Celica emblem... but what makes Celica so special? Don't get me wrong, 1st Gen Celica GT Liftback hold dear to my heart... but really, why gotta be named Celica? Celica have any records? Let me see.

Maybe in rally? No Citroen, Peugeot (of course Subie & Mitsu too) own the place. Last Toyota won was w Corolla (in '99). Maybe in drag? NHRA did Funny Car class and had Celica... but other big engine own the place. Supra is only one that they can take em on. Maybe in GT? No, they all been replaced with Supra. Maybe in drifting... Nope, AE86 & Supra is seen more (in JP Chaser & Mark is seen more for Toyota). Celica is father of Supra? No, 2000GT is father of Supra.

So Celica fan here, please enlighten me. I don't get it

Wrong. This has nothiing to do with being a Celica fan...

If someone who has as much authority/insider info as Tada says it's going to be called the Scion fU, then I'd be saying that. I'm just going with that I hear rather than wildly speculating about what I would like to see.

The fact that I would not be heartbroken if it were badged Celica is irrelevant.

Let's not confuse wishful thinking with simply stating what has and has not been said by people who know better than us.

Someone on here said they should call it the Trueno. Funny enough, no one at Toyota has said anything like that, so there's no reason to presume such an outcome -- I'd say it's only slightly more likely to get a name like that than it is to get called the Toyota Monkey Ass Mobile.

It's unlikely they'll call it the FT-86 simply because "FT" means "future Toyota". It's possible they could keep the 86 in there but again no one has said anything like that, at least that I've read.

Speaking of concept cars, the concept car for the 7th gen Celica was called the XYR-concept, and Celica. As you know, it wasn't released as the XYR.

Show me a Toyota insider calling the production version of the FT-86 by any other name than Celica, and I'll shrug and say fair enough. What's so hard to understand here?

You guys are coming up with all of these complex reasons why Celica is appropriate or not appropriate and the bottom line is this is the only name Toyota insiders confirmed repeatedly was being considered.

Sheesh.

i think everyone here is taking this too seriously. the badging on the car is likely a moot point.

raise your hand if you are NOT going to de-badge asap???

It's the article you started to translate -- unless I'm imagining things (always possible), I could swear Tada said that "Celica" was being considered.

Of course, that doesn't mean it will be chosen, but until I hear another name from the horse's mouth, I have to assume that's the top contender.

Nah -- whatever they call it is fine. If it performs to my satisfaction, has the features I want, and I can afford it, I really don't care what it's called, and I have no reason to go out of my way to conceal it.

"Celica" would be jimmies on the icing, but the icing AND the cake are the car's looks, performance, and price.
