On second thought, I wanted to correct myself... I'm actually having trouble rotating my entire ankle in order for my heel to catch the gas pedal... I guess I have long legs (combined with how the pedals and spacing are set-up from the factory), my knee hits the steering wheel when I'm performing the entire rotation (Note that I've raised the steering column up as much as I prefer).

So you could just say that I do a semi-rotation. And without losing the firm contact of the brake pedal, I proceed to blip the gas while performing the most rotation as best as I can... In other words, the mid-side of my foot blips the gas as accurately as my abilities allow.

Not exactly the perfect definition or art of heel-and-toe, but it works, so what can I say...

aside from this being a brakecelerateornering technique, i have seen people talk about proper form in regards to foot position, and how the traditional toes on brake heel blips throttle is no longer in vogue? whats considered the proper foot position now?

Senna Heel-Toeing at suzuka in an NSX (This is how I do it, I guess I should call it toe-toeing lol)
[ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8By2AEsGAhU"]Ayrton Senna's Heel-and-toe - YouTube[/ame]

The "true" heel-toe.

Is one way right and one wrong? I don't think so. I say personal preference. As long as you have your foot securely planted on the brake, I don't see anything wrong with "toe-toeing". Actually, having my foot rotate when trying the "true" heel-toe way seems less secure.

What are you guys doing?

ill86, how do you teach it when instructing novice drivers?

On the Senna video you could call that: Toe - 5th Metatarsal. This is very common as well.

played around on my way to the store to pick up lunch, in my '95 corolla (dont laugh) the pedals are too far apart to confidently brake and reach over to blip the throttle with my little toe.. and rotating my foot is not happening because either the top goes way up under the dash or the bottom hits the floorboard..

first world problems...

I whipped up a quick reference on how I do it in my dad's TSX (Footwork only):

Step 1: You're driving...

Step 2: Brake as you approach the corner.

Step 3: Clutch in, downshift, blip the throttle with the side of your foot:

Step 4: Clutch out, continue braking.

Step 5: Corner and add gas, continue driving.

That's how I do it. Sometimes the right way is too uncomfortable for my ankle (I'm a size 9), so I slip in technique and end up using half my foot to brake and half to blip:

Dangerous. Don't do this. Your foot could slip off the brake and you could lose control. I do it sometimes, but that's because I'm an idiot.

Sometimes, my slip isn't too bad, but still doesn't retain proper technique:

Hopefully this clears up any questions on how to heel-toe. I've sat in the FR-S and tried to heel toe with the car turned off, and it's pretty easy the way I do it, but the TSX is definitely easier, and the gas pedal in the FR-S is a bit higher than I'd like, so I can see how it would be difficult for someone with smaller feet to heel toe. Cheers everyone.

Thanks for asking-

I teach as in the above video. Side to side with as much rotation as comfortable and necessary due to pedal placement and driver ability.

Yes, your foot can slip, but as with anything practice makes perfect.

Taller, longer legged people, or folks with skinny feet are generally less comfortable.

Note this can be practiced in day to day driving. You only need say 20% pedal pressure when practicing the placement.

Hope this helps.

Also, you should be using small muscle groups. ie the muscles in your foot and toes. Small muscles for small inputs. Large muscles for large inputs.

When you have big feet, like me, it's not heel-toe. It's more like little toe-big toe. If I put my heel on the gas my toes will almost be on the clutch. My feet aren't even that big, I only wear size 13.
